I had centipede sod laid in my yard 3 years ago. I’m starting to have Bermuda take over. 1, how did this happen. And 2, how do I get it to just be one grass type. It’s killing my OCD to have two different grasses

Spray with over the top 2 by fertilome. Spray it in the morning when there is still dew and you can see the Bermuda well. It may take 2 applications to knock it back.

Don’t over fertilize the centipede because it well get worse.

It happened because centipede is a shitty grass type. Bermuda is more dominant. Mow low and fert often to convert your lawn to Bermuda

Agree with you. I had centipede and something killed most of it over the winter. This hybrid bermuda that was less than .05% of my yard last year has taken over the bulk of my yard now and it’s greener and doesn’t grow so tall that if I’m running behind mowing it’s still easy to cut. What has taken over my yard is that shorter golf coarse variety. When I lived in Little Rock all those yards up there were bermuda. I had common bermuda that would grow taller than hybrids and I sat my lawnmower high as it would go during the hottest months, top it with my mower, and it looked amazing cut at 3.5” to 4”. It was over your ankle high but looked great when you just topped it the stuff would get nice and thick. I’m done with centipede. We had that crap when I was kid growing up in Ruston and don’t like that lime green grass.

My dad had Celebration Bermuda mixed in with his Centipede sod in 2017. He finally gave up fighting it this year and it looks great. He's retired so he doesn't mind mowing every two days.

He had gotten with an Ag Center agent for advice on how to kill it. Whatever he'd apply would stress the Centipede out so much that his yard always looked like shite.

You have been given a gift. How many sq ft of turf do you have?

And weed control in Bermuda is much easier than centipede.

I was considering starting this exact topic. I have centipede that is starting to look like shite. Some Bermuda is overtaking in a few spots. I'd like to maybe overseed with Bermuda and kill off the centipede eventually. I mow low and often already (might be too much mowing for the centipede). Should I just seed and fert? Recommendation on seed? In New Orleans.

There would be some challenges to overseeing a centipede lawn to convert to Bermuda. You might consider killing it off first. Royal txd is probably the top seed at the moment.

Whatever species of Bermuda I have growing in my Centipede doesn’t need over seeding. I kid you not heading into the fall 99.5% of my yard was Centipede. For whatever reason the Centipede took a beating in late spring frost and this Bermuda is putting on a show. Talk about grow fast when it got warm. Looks like it grows a foot a day chocking out that Centipede. Wish I knew what kind I have because it came that way from the sod farm. It’s not common Bermuda and dark green. It’s pretty. I’m glad I didn’t try to kill the Bermuda and revive that Centipede.

I have some in my front yard. Was doing great prior to that 1 day freeze a few months ago. Came back much better than everyone else around town. It’s healthy, but definitely not thriving right now with full sunlight and 100 degree heat.

I’ve had Centipede for many years. I’m 53 and moved around the country with promotions from my job so I’ve had Centipede, Bermuda both common and hybrid, St. Augustine, and Empire Zoysia. I can make Centipede look nice when I used Lesco 15-0-15 with 2% iron. That fertilizer turned it pretty green for Centipede. 80% of my Centipede died last winter. The whole neighborhood has the same issues. The whole county across the bay from Mobile. I’ve never seen anything like it to this degree. I have always found Centipede easy to maintain and when healthy did good for me. But having a chance to start over this year, I simply want something different. Something that is more green. Bermuda and Zoysia have been the two I preferred over Centipede. I’m just mad at my Centipede and will acknowledge I’ve had some great looking yards with it, but that Lesco 15-0-15 made it be all it could be in my opinion. That particular fertilizer was a game changer on turning that grass a darker colored green.

My centipede does well and has for 15 years. My centipede will take over other grasses, including bermuda. A little fertilizer, a little water and sun - that's all I need.

I know it's not an option for most people but, centipede loves a reel mower. 5/8" cut. It stripes better than bermuda. Another advantage its really hard to scalp it like bermuda under normal mowing. You dont have the brown stems, you can go from 2.5" to 5/8" in the same day and its still green as can be.

I didn’t want to say anything, but there’s no way that’s healthy.

I scalp my Bermuda every year, but even then I do a pre-scalp first and put down potassium at the same time.

I cut at least twice a week. I was just saying when you do scalp it due to rain, vacation or whatever it doesnt look too bad since it doesnt have the brown underneath.
