Asian Garden Landscaping around my pool (Pic heavy)

I thought I'd share this as much to share the experiment as to show it off. Most of these, I'm about a year in on having planted. The smaller maples were added later.
The yard is a mess, as half of my sod will deliver Good Friday. But my maples have leafed out, so i thought it was a good time to share some pics. All of these are (on paper) supposed to survive zone 9. The maples, with the exception of my "Baton Rouge" get morning sun and afternoon shade. I'm hopeful that everything will survive the long-haul, but like all gardening some of it is a crap shoot. But most of the big stuff seems to have thrived through last summer.
I thought you guys might enjoy seeing something totally different. There's also assorted junipers sprinkled in there that I didn't label. The maples and assorted dwarf pines were all mail ordered. The big thunderheads, black dragon and tall hollywood juniper were all from a nursery in Lafayette.
The big pines are the largest thing in there, and they are not a very big pine. I plan on keeping them relatively small. The rest of the pines are all considered dwarfs and only get a few feet big after 10 years. One cool thing is my pool area looked pretty much like this throughout the winter. The maples are the only thing out there that looses their leaves.
Hupps Dwarf Japanese Maple
Autumn Moon Japanese Maple
Mikawa Yatsubusa Japanese Maple
2 of the maples, cryptomeria japonica globosa nanas
From left to right
Paul's Gold Cypress, a rock, Black Dragon Cryptomeria (tall thing), Fukuzumi Jap. White Pine (behind rocks), Thunderhead Jap. Black Pine (large pine), Hedgehog Cedar of Lebanon (small thing left of Foo Dog), Catherine Elizabeth Jap. White Pine, Kotobuki Japanese Black Pine
Ron's Broom Jap. White Pine
Fukuzumi Jap. White Pine
Thunderhead J. Black Pine
"Baton Rouge" Japanese Maple
Thunderhead Japanese Black Pine #2

Cool. How big do you expect those pines to get?

The thunderheads are the largest variety.
Here's a few "full grown" examples.
And if left unpruned, it wants to do this.
But they handle fairly aggressive pruning. Black pines are frequently used for bonsai.

Good job. Pruning the pines should happen this fall, but if you are wanting to shape I'd start now before they get to tough.

I did a little pruning in the fall to clean up the view of the trunk, but so far I’m happy with their shape. If they start going too fast I’ll start shortening candles.

Looks great. Will you keep the maples low, as well?

Thanks. Two of the maples are true dwarfs and likely won’t get bigger than a medium shrub. The center one (autumn moon) might get to 8’ tall eventually

I dig it! I like your shisa dog too.

Now I want some of these

The thunderheads are pretty much the centerpieces. I keep trying to figure out how to plop more in my yard. I’ve seen them at JRN and Maas nursery’s in Houston. Such personality.

Japanese Maples in the full sun. Good luck with that.

One is in full Sun, the "Baton Rouge" as it is the rare heat tolerant variety. Learn about it here
The other 3 are under crape myrtles and receive morning sunlight until about 11:30am and then they are in dappled shade.
