So what's the life span of today's appliances? Fricking killing me that shite is so damn expensive, but can't get 10yrs out them. Enough venting.... so we have a kitchenaid double stack oven that really hasn't been used a lot until the past 2yrs. Now the top oven doesn't heat or come on and trying to get a local BR appliance person to look at it is frustrating. Suggestions??

Some guy at work was telling me the other day it's because they don't use lead to make things anymore.

No idea whether there's any truth in that.

Planned obsolescence makes more money for appliance companies

My washer and dryer are older Maytag commercial units, no sensors, nothing digital, just solid-state, inefficient, and easy to repair. My oven and cooktop are nothing fancy, fewer options the less to go wrong.

I'm working on a 1950's Thor SpeedSaw circular saw at the moment, old stuff just works.

When I was trying to research what brand to buy last time I was looking, I found a couple of articles saying that the magic number all manufactures aim for is 10 years. They want the tightest bell curve they can get on that 10 year mark since at that point people are less likely to feel ripped off and they will come back and buy again. But it isn't too long that they miss out on additional sales.

I think it was Whirlpool that was the best at this. Most likely to hit 10 years and most likely for it to break right after.

Old appliances are wild when it comes to lifespan. My 89 year old grandmother just had a microwave & washer go out last year. She’s owned both since the 70’s

research it on youtube.

Stuff is really easy to work on and it's most likely a $10 part that's gone out on it.

Wife's dryer crapped out on us a few weeks ago. Turns out is was the heating unit. A $20 part that an appliance repairman would have charged $250.

Took me 20 min to diagnose it and may 10 min to fix it once I got the part.

Blame the electronics.
They are too complex now.

I remember when you were talking about only putting $100k into a full-house renovation. Those were good time and great laughs.

It'll last with some big repair costs.
I have a 22 year old Subzero I plan to keep it going forever.

Dryers are easy to fix.
Always have been always will be.
Now fridges get complex and new washers are up there.

Could be a $20 element or a $1 thermal fuse, could also be the $200 main control.

Gas dryers from the mid 80s to now all used a standard gas magnetic coil. What fit a GE, fit a Whirlpool, fit a Samsung even.
Now LG decided to replace those $20 coils with a $125 coil/ valve set up. That's my price. I have to make a profit, then labor, so you can set it gets expensive and it's not just the repairman screwing you.

Repairs are getting more costly, and our profits are much lower because of it.

Napoleon, what is the best appliance brand for longevity? I bought all new Kenmore appliances for our house about 3 years ago and the refrigerator went out after 1 year. Thank God I purchased the extended warranty. Will never buy Kenmore again.

Honestly there are no good brands that stand out more than the others. With the exception of Speed Queen with laundry.

Kenmore is just a badge, they never make anything. The first three numbers in a Kenmore model number tell you who really made your appliance.

I hear you. I replaced my wall oven just a few weeks ago after the one I had spit the bit. I put that one in back on 06 after Katrina and the subsequent power surges as Entergy was getting power back up to the neighborhood. Damn this cost me almost $600 back then.

Fast forward to a month ago and back in the market for a new wall oven and they are now $1800 and up for anything that will last more than a few years.

Same with washing machines. I had one for over 25 years and it finally wore out. Since then, I'm on my 3rd washer in the last 20 years.
