Can you tell the size, SEER or anything from this label? Where would I look for that info if not here? Just moved in and no documentation as to who installed or size so I'm trying to figure it out. Its a RUUD labelled unit.

BONUS - whats that little doodad in the second pic?

Follow up question:

my return is 24x36 which is apparently a fairly obnoxious size for finding cheap filters and even replacing the return grate was an adventure in finding one that size that didn't cost an arm and a leg. Neither home depot nor lowe's carried one that size even online.

is that normal? this is an older house so maybe that larger size used to be more common?

what would justify such a large return in a house? its almost like this is a commercial size.

I can't think of a scenario where having too large (area) of a supply is a bad thing. (Length of return is different)

- Helps keep static pressure across filter low
- Larger filters last longer between changes

General rule of thumb is 144 sq in of return per ton so you are covered.

Edit: RP(16 SEER) (48,000) btu 12,000 btu per ton

Can remember what the other letters after that mean but the 2 is a 2 stage

The black doodad is a filter. The doodad with the caps is a Schrader valve.

You have the answer on size (tonnage).

Return grill. The guideline is 400 CFM air per ton, so 1600 CFM return air required for a 4-ton unit. Filter Grill - capable of providing 2 CFM air per sq inch with filter installed, so 36 x 24 x 2 = 1728 CFM - thus your return grill is sized properly to provide your system with the return air it needs. That assumes the return air duct that goes to the air handler/furnace is also 24 x 36 in dimension. But if a round return air duct is attached to the return air grill and enters the return air plenum from the filter grill it should be about 19-20 inches in dia, if metal duct, to supply the 1600 cfm, maybe about 22-24 in dia if flex duct.

Good hardware stores will often carry “odd” size filters not carried by the big box stores.

It's actually a high side service port . The service port has a schrader in it.

Go on Amazon and buy them, filterbuy, filter king, or airx have been the same quality as filtrete.

I paid $15/filter for a 6 pack of Merv 11.
