Aluminum wiring in a house

This is pretty common in homes from the 60s and early 70s due to the war and copper shortages.
Who has it? Do you care?

No I don’t have it in my house and no I really wouldn’t want it. I know they still use aluminum sub feeds and ranges are pulled in aluminum sometimes.

My in laws house has an addition that was wired with aluminum back from the 60/70s. Will say that they have had issues with outlets overheating and burning over time. Luckily not to the point that there has been an actual fire or anything.
Who knows if with the addition, proper outlets were used etc. But it's always made me a little wary of aluminum wiring with their issues.

no I dont and yes I would remove it if I had it

It’s fairly common. There are CO/AL rated plugs and switches you can replace.

... and breakers?
Also seen them heat up.

I have it. It was discovered in the inspection before we bought our house. Built in 1970. Had electricians come in and change every switch and outlet, tied the aluminium to copper using Alumiconn connectors. Ran me about 5 grand.

Pretty much every service feed will be aluminum and as far as internal wiring is concerned if the fixtures are rated for Al-Cu and the connections are made properly it's a non-issue. My house was built in the early 1950's and has some aluminum wiring that I've checked.

If you have Aluminum wiring, Replace it with copper.

correct
everything the utility company runs to your service entrance is aluminum

My house was built in 1969 and has been through 2 inspections and 3 appraisals. Not a big deal and I don't even think about it.

Why?
Small conductors are prone to hitting high currents irregularly. The hot cold cycling causes the aluminum to "flow" and work loose from the connections. Poor connections get hot and cause fires.
You don't want #10awg or smaller in a home for these reasons.

My question was rhetorical. If the connections are proper, there is no reason to waste money and materials changing out aluminum wiring.

Incorrect. Proper connections were made back in the 1960s and 70s. They failed.

My home was built in 1970 and is entirely aluminum wiring. Will change out wiring when I reno parts of the house but am not going to rewire the entire house.

They aren't proper now. What's proper now is using the correct modern connectors. And with the proper connectors there is no reason to rip out all of the wiring like the poster I was replying to stated.

It can be hard to sell a house with aluminum wiring

Technically what is proper now is not using aluminum for new small circuits as it is against code. That was my point. Is there ways to make it safer without full replacement? Yes.
Would I personally as an electrical engineer who designs electrical systems for a living want to use the adapters in my home? No.
