AC - Rat keeps chewing wiring

A rat keeps getting into my outside condenser unit and chewing up the wires for the pressure switch...2nd time in 2 months.
What's your solution? What are the best traps out there?
Can I put some steel wool around any of the openings in the unit?

This has always worked well for me.

Auto manufacturers used to use chili extract to keep them off. It became a big problem 20 years ago when the foreign companies first went to plant-based insulation. I haven’t heard much about it since then.
You can poison outside if you don’t have pets and it is fenced in. A cat is better though.

Old school snap trap baited with peanut butter. I've caught a lot of rats and mice over the years using this method.
I also like to use a length of nylon string to tie the trap off to something just in case the rodent isn't killed right away. They will drag a trap and can make it hard to find if not killed outright.

I’ve got a small dog that roams on that side yard from time to time.

You need a cat. Spraying the wires with pepper spray might help but i don’t know if that is corrosive to the insulation.

mix vaseline, cayenne pepper, and hot sauce and lather it on the wires (obviously just the tubing/sleeve and not any conductor).
And set out traps all over. Glue traps are kind of fricked up, but they certainly work. Put one right underneath it.

These victor plastic snap traps work really well. Just put peanut butter in the bait piece.

There are probably cheaper rolls than this, but gives you and idea. Roll has 65' of tape imbedded with capsaicin, the hot ingredient in chili's.

My daughter has a Honda Insight (hybrid) that mice chewed her wiring. Towed to the dealer, contacted insurance and told them for $300 more they would wrap the wiring harness with the tape. Nope insurance wouldn't cover it. So my daughter paid and has been fine since.

Not saying to ingnore a rodent issue around your home but It shouldn't be that hard to block off any opening on the condenser. Get some metal or aluminum flashing and some short self tappers and go to work. Just make sure no screw pierces a line.

I just had a rat chew the wires to my septic aerator motor. Apparently, an ingredient in the wire coating is seed oil which they are attracted to. Most likely similar thing for you.

OFF 40% deet. Spray wires and the chewers will move on.

I’ve been battling them at my house. They’re feasting between my chicken coop, cow barn, and barn. I’ve used the Victor plastic traps, the electric trap, and old school traps but they smarten up to all of them eventually. Haven’t used poison because the dogs, chickens, and goats eat every damn thing.
I started sneaking out at dusk and shooting them, and got a ratinator trap and I finally think I’ve finished most of them off.

Had some discussion at work with hunters about rats chewing wires on ATVs in the off-season, they said they spray wires with white lithium grease, no more problems.
