It may be different for your location but I normally would start seeds in October and plant out sets in January. I plant short day varieties.

eyeing that currently forecasted 27 a week from today for me. Potato planting may push back a week.

I’m at the top of the short day range. I bought these hybrid seeds last year from Lazy Dog farms to plant in BR. I’ve read onion seeds don’t keep well. If they don’t sprout in the next few days I’ll just go to nursery up the road and grab some Dixondale slips.

I'm planning for the last week in February. It should be warm enough by then. I'm just worried about how dry it will be.

I've noticed a ton of trees already blooming. Next weeks cold snap gonna wreck havoc on the citrus growers around here.

I mulched the garlic bed before the snow started yesterday. Everything else is on its own, 19/-1 forecasted for Tuesday.

only one nite in 20’s here (wed). I’m not bringing everything in this time just the avocado (that has buds on it for the first time after 5 years). Everything else is on its own.

all of my shite in the ground is budded out and/or already in new growth. Gladiolus, figs, tropicals, amaryllis etc…all busting out.

Oh well

After this cold snap I'm hoping for some warmer weather to start hardening off my pepper and eggplant seedlings. They're starting to get pretty big.

Don't know if I'll be putting anything in the ground before March 15th. I'll have to see what the forecast is looking like around that time.

Forecast for Wednesday night has come up a bit too 28. Onions supposedly are good down to 26 so I probably won't cover. Went ahead and harvested the cabbage, so they're not a problem.

Covered the whole garden. Onions, strawberries, lettuce, spinach, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts. Only thing left to fend for itself is the garlic.

Welp, forecast lows nudged back down a bit. Guess I'm covering onions tomorrow. They should be ok at 26, but not worth risking a whole crop on one stupid cold night.

I just potted up my seedlings last night. They stalled a bit because I think they were getting too wet. My peppers have a way to go before I'm comfortable topping them, so my plants may not go into the ground until late March. Probably going to start some early cucumbers, squash, and watermelons this weekend, even though I feel like they never transplant well.

I would not cover my onions. I have had snow cover my onions numerous times with no ill effects. We got down to 5 in last month's snow storm and my uncovered onions were fine.

I can vouch for that.

I’ve never covered my onions and they have always been fine.

Snow insulates and keeps the colder air from reaching them. From what I've read, they're good with temps down to 26, so with last night's low around 25, I covered...

In other news, my seed starts were a failure. At first I blamed using old seeds, but I've discovered it's because I got cheap and tried to create my own seed starting mix. Instead I apparently invented a new form of concrete impenetrable by water. Patent pending.

Starting over now, so it'll be a race against the heat.
