We had some bad thunderstorms come through at my place. 70 mph wind gusts!

My son was freaked out cause he thought there was a tornado. I was worried about the transplants I had just put in the garden.

Luckily they all survived. The tomatoes were laid over but they’ll be ok.

We had some pretty significant rain on the northshore yesterday too. Thankfully the transplants did fine. I've been pretty lazy with my seed starts, but it is nice having them planted out hah. I wish I could've gotten my tomatoes in the ground two weeks ago but they weren't ready. I think I'm going to move on from the Orta seed starting pots I've got next go round. I think they keep the seedlings too wet and it stalls them out a bit. What do you use for your starts?

What's everyone else using to deter critters? I ordered some ghost pepper flakes that should arrive today I am going to try.

i dumped cayenne back there but i'm sure the rain washed it away

I’ve been using cayenne in addition to Repel-All spray. Spray has strong garlic smell that lingers even after a rain. I know the rabbit that hangs around my house doesn’t like the spray.

I’m fighting a rat that likes strawberries. I saw him eating the poison block this evening. He only got 4 while my wife picked another 30 or so.

Squirrels are already starting their shite over here. Set out the squirrelinator trap and caught 2 already. Damn onions and strawberry boxes look like set off minefields.
And I don't know if it was the squirrels or the weather from the other morning, but apparently I did lose one cayenne pepper plant. It was broken at the base. I'll have to go buy a transplant to replace it, but I'm just glad it wasn't worse than that with the wind we got!

Should I plant today my veggies or wait until after we get all the upcoming rain we are supposed to be having in the next few days?

When it rains I notice such a difference (good) in my plants vs hose water.
Thinking of a collection tank, but the garden is far from any roof lines/gutters.
If your seedlings are a nice size, I would plant.

I haven’t had any issues with germination using that method.

yes, those primrose WILL take over. I love them, but had to get rid of them all.
Have any of you had luck with tomatillos? I tried one years ago and it didn't do squat. This year, I am trying seeds. Any advice on growing them?

Am I too late to plant a spring garden in North MS? Recently bought a house and would love to start garden but clueless at where to start.
But hoping I can at least buy a few pots and plants that have already started and place in there?

Am I too late to plant a spring garden in North MS?
1) pick a sunny spot, full sun all/most of the day
2) figure out how you will water it, reachable by a garden hose is good enough
3) decide how big, how long
4) buy a 4x4 or two and cut in into 16" pieces
5) buy enough 2x12's to border your bed
6) use the 4x4 pieces to make your corners, screw the 2x12's on to the corners to make a rectangle. beat the 4" showing on the 4x4 corners into the ground to anchor the frame
7) fill it with dirt and plant, top with composted manure and mulch
i always just put new beds right on top of the grass, it will smother and die

Thanks for that -not knowing where to put the beds is my biggest issue. Our side yard gets sun for a decent portion of the day and it’s close to a hose bib, but it’s definitely not all day and it’s in and out (wooded, so the house shades part of it some of the day and the woods do as well).
The most obvious spot is on the other side of the house we have an extra lot between our house and the neighbors, it would be full sun all day, but it’s not that close to a hose..

How much longer do I have before it will be too late to plant? Can I go to a garden store and buy plants that have already started growing in a pot and transport?
