I wonder how long it will take for our stores to get new plants?

Was wondering about that too. I bet everything at the stores are toast as well.

Any garden center worth a darn should’ve had everything well protected. I know Lastrapes in Opelousas has all of their veggies in a greenhouse area that’s easily closed off. They had a ton last time I went and probably still have a bunch.

Looks like I may have declared defeat prematurely. I had a hodge-podge of items to use as coverings. The peppers under thin plastic planting cups then draped with a blanket are toast, but the ones under the faucet insulators look like they may be ok. My tomatoes look mostly dead, but mostly dead means slightly alive. Basil looks bruised but not totaled.

That’s good news. It’ll be warm the rest of the week. They should bounce back quickly.

I covered all my bedding plants and everything did fine. I ignored the Vitexes because they were too big. Them and the crepe myrtles got rocked, but they'll bounce back quickly.

I'm going to plant out vegetables tomorrow. Still a bit too cold for me to want to put tomatoes out tonight.

Lowes in Lafayette had a couple pepper plants that looked like they got hit hard, but the rest of the peppers and tomatoes looked fine. All the plants at Stine in Youngsville looked good as well.

Satsumas appear to be doing fine. Lost a few leaves but very few. The blossums appear ok unless they can look ok and not be.

Covered a new meyer lemon and it lost a 6 leaves.

Potatoes, covered them and they are all fine. I think they would have been fine either way because there was one air gap for allow for air movement.

Covered my tomatoes and bellpeppers cucumbers, squash and zucchini with a thin tarp. The plants that were from the store all appear dead (bellpeppers and tomatoes 14 plants).

Everything else was just sprouting from seed. Tomatoes and bellpeppers cucumbers, squash and zucchini all just an inch tall survived. Should have put a heater or light underneath the tarp.

Everything

The low is supposed to be ~40 tonight. My tomato and pepper plants have been covered since Saturday. If they didn't freeze last night would y'all leave them covered another night or uncover them now? If I leave them covered tonight they won't be uncovered until tomorrow afternoon.

I uncovered during the day with good sun. Had em covered with 5 gal buckets then a tarp w/ heat lamp over the buckets. Still lost some, not all.

If they survived last night 40 degrees won’t hurt them. May as well uncover them and let them get some afternoon sun.

As far as replacing any that were lost...would you direct seed at this point or are the soil temps still too low?

Was about to ask this. Looks like 42 for the low tonight here.

Last week (I forget exactly which day) it got down to 38 degrees early one morning. I had left everything outside because the forecast said it was supposed to only get down to about 42. Everything was fine.

Now if you have really young seedlings that are still sensitive, I'd probably err on the side of caution. But my plants are 2+ feet tall and trying to set fruit.

I'd try to find some transplants for tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, etc. And maybe let the soil warm back up a little and direct sow beans and cucurbits.

So if the main stem looks fine but the leaves are dead could they bounce back?
Nevermind. I pulled it and it's dead. It was an Early Girl with 2 small tomatoes already.

Over half dead :(

Didn't care about the beans/squash/cucumbers. Here's what died that I had covered.

1 Corbaci pepper
1 shishito
2 Jimmy nardello
1 Paprika

2x Woodle Orange Tomatoes
1 Evil Olive
2 Amish Paste
1 Sart Roloise
2 Black Krim
2 Black Beauty

New growth on satsuma tree was burnt. Haven't checked the Meyer lemon yet.

Lost about a 1/3rd of my row of snap beans, some of the foliage on potatoes burnt, 1 cucumber I didn’t cover gone and a few burnt leaves that were touching buckets on a couple of tomatoes. Everything under the row domes looks unscathed.

That sucks.

Same. All new growth on my citrus trees are fried. They’ll recover, but they took a hit. And covering my strawberries may have done more harm than good. They look rough. All of my blackberries and blueberries (fruit, not the plants) are also done for. I had a shite ton of blackberries coming up. So I’m kinda sad about that. frick Mother Nature and her bullshite.

I did manage to get all of my tomatoes in the ground before sundown. Low of only 45 tonight so they’ll be just fine. Highs in the 70’s tomorrow.

I am putting tomatoes and peppers in tomorrow evening. I should have re-potted a week ago.

Have you been feeding them to get them to this state?
