Our tomato plants look great, but aren’t setting fruit. It’s been so hot here in SE Texas the last 2-3 weeks, I don’t think it got cool enough at night for the fruit to set. Extremely glad I installed drip hose in April so I didn’t have to water by sprayer or by hand.

Have you fertilized them any? Too much nitrogen will give you beautiful, bushy plants but less fruit.

Have you tried giving them some plant food?

I’m jealous. We haven’t had a drop of rain here in SWLA. Everyone’s lawn is turning brown. The good thing is I’ve got zero diseases on my tomatoes since the leaves are never wet and I’m using a soaker hose. I’ve got a lot of green tomatoes and am impatiently waiting on my first Cherokee purples to ripen.

Tomorrow I begin site prep for the beehive(s). I’m going to add a couple wheelbarrows of dirt to raise one end up, lay down some barrier for weeds/mulch, fence in with pvc coated welded wire, and plant some vines to trellis up the fence. I originally got confederate jasmine and honeysuckle but got way too many plants. I went back to return the honeysuckle and picked up a Mars grape. The wife will be thrilled

The rain just missed us yesterday. I’m going to have to go hook up the irrigation today.

One of my wife’s friends wants my nuc. She originally wanted it, then wasn’t sure. But now she has decided she wants it. Women…

So I apologize. I know there wasn’t a firm commitment or anything. But since you’re prepping your bee area I figured I’d let you know.

No problem at all man.

Let me know when she changes her mind again

How has it been for you having 1 hive? I know a lot of people say to get 2 or more so you can borrow resources if needed.

I haven’t had any issues yet. I like having to only maintain one hive. But I definitely see the benefit of having multiple. If I were to lose this hive I wouldn’t have any to fall back on.

remember that those plastic buckets are not water permeable so you are not getting evaporation like you would in a raised bed. I’d bet they are staying wetter between watering than you think they are

So you think the peppers are too wet in this scenario? You might be right.

Someone here shared the cheapy electric toothbrush trick for setting tomatoes and I’ve never had so many. It’s unbelievable. Just touch the plants very close to the flowers with the toothbrush on and you’re done.

I thought you were messing with me but googled it anyway. Wow, we’ll pick up a couple of cheap ones today. Thank you!

I had the exact same thoughts whenever I first heard it. It’s crazy. They say that tomato blossoms are low in carbohydrates so aren’t necessarily bees favorite source for pollen. I guess if there’s clover or whatever nearby they’ll look to those first. I also read that in areas with high humidity the pollen stays sticky and doesn’t travel like it should and lord knows we have plenty of humidity here. I actually now strategize about what flowers to pollinate so I don’t overload the plants. It works!

Yep, after watching some of those videos, I am going to go with a the vertical wooden stake and tie the tomatoes up it instead of the old standard metal tomato cage. I think a more regimented trimming program may help also. That will be my plan for Fall tomatoes this year.

Anyone know what all this shite is popping up in my garden? This was a flowerbed turned garden this year that never had many weeds. I did till it so I could have brought seeds up I guess. But ideas? Not the herbs in the picture.

I can’t tell what’s supposed to be weeds and what’s supposed to be herbs.

Yesterday and today I did my first “big” harvest. Stuff is finally starting to roll in.

Pickling fixing to commence. We had a lot more blackberries than that, but we’ve been eating the crap out of them. And we had more jalapeños than that as well. Last night I stuffed some with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon. Air fried for 20 minutes at 350F. My goodness they were delicious. My wife went to the store today and bought more cream cheese and bacon.

The garden is starting it’s rise to a crescendo.
