My fall seeding has been packing. I tried a bit but none sprouted. My store room may be a bit too hot.

May have to cheat with store bought plants.

Half of my tomatoes i left in the ground from spring are doing well. Literally the half that get shaded in the afternoon. They actually started flowering again.

Okra going nuts. As well as peppers. Eggplants started producing again too.

I've got tomato seedlings that look as good as any I've ever started, but I'm holding off putting them out due to the heat. Come September, they're on their own in the garden.

1 was ok, 1 was meh, 1 was not ripe.

It’s a new place and I am starting a raised bed. Kids picked seeds out in the spring so I said sure let’s plant them there.

There’s another melon growing as well.

I've been lazy with my fall garden. I didn't start my usual purple/yellow cauliflower so I'll probably be buying cauliflower and broccoli transplants from the feed store. I seem to remember Clegg's in BR having purple cauliflower so maybe I'll make a trip over there.

I planted some Roma tomato transplants from the feed store last week. First time growing them but I make a lot of salsa so I'm hopeful they'll be good for that. My peppers are starting to produce really well again. My okra and eggplant still going crazy too, but I'll probably pull them soon. My okra plants are probably 7' tall.

I got lazy and haven't planted anything until last Sunday. It may be a little late but I planted squash, cucumbers, bush green beans, and bush butter peas. I have never tried fall crops of these so we shall see what happens. My cucumbers and squash in the spring were a major disappointment. Next month I will fill out the rest of the areas with greens, and winter peas.

Pillage, I have been reading about gardeners having a lot of success using shade sail type materials over their garden area when the weather is still too hot. It may be worth looking into for the plants that are struggling. I am going to try it out next summer to see if I can extend my spring plants a bit.

That’s a neat idea. I considered putting my big patio umbrella out there.

I’ve also been considering finally setting up a drip irrigation system. But I’m wondering if I should wait till the spring? Not sure how those things would do during a freeze in the winter. Anyone have any experience with that? Do lines bust easily? Would mulching over them protect enough from freezing? Is there a way to “winterize” the system? I’m guessing maybe flushing the lines would probably be sufficient. Or would I have to remove everything during a freeze?

I’d like to eventually set it all up on an automated timer. There’s an orbit system that links to your home wifi and has an app where you can control it from your phone. If I went that route, I’d have to trench and bury a line from the faucet to the garden. Cause if I just left a hose running across the yard, this time of year the water would be scalding hot when the timer would run.

If you do it, try setting up on the west side to block afternoon sun. The west side of my tomatoes look like a wasteland but the east side that gets sun blocked by the other side looks normal and is flowering.

LOL, most use the shade sail type material that still lets a lot of the light but less of the UV to get a cooling effect. More like a tight mesh where it just knocks some of the light and heat down to a more tolerable level.

As far as the drip irrigation, I have been using drip, soakers, and minisprayers for years now. They are very resilient. I have never had a line bust as usually the 1/2" main line is only about half full when not running. If you are worried, you can just crimp off the end of the 1/2" line run with a figure 8 that they sell in the irrigation section. When it may freeze, just slide the crimp back and drain the line. Takes 5 seconds. I have my system zoned on three automated hose end timers. I hope that helps. I have only seem positives with my system. Very few negatives. Just watch your system every once in a while when it is running to see if any fittings have popped and you have a 10' spray of water that's wasting water.

Did anyone have garden damage from Laura? I had some tomatoes and brussel sprouts planted, but that was it. The tomato plants had a good bit of damage, but they are already rebounding. They’ll all survive. I had tied them up the best I could. Brussel sprouts had a few leaves shredded. Other than that they are good. In fact, all of the cloudy weather and rain have been a blessing for them. I swear they all doubled in size over the last couple of days. I’m going to put the broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage in the ground here in the next couple of weeks. Weatherman said we’re supposed to have a cold front come through second week of September. Can’t wait!

Also, I went to Lowe’s and got a drip irrigation kit, plus some extra, about a week ago. Not that I’ve needed it that last few days. But, I got the whole garden setup on drip irrigation. Should’ve done that a long time ago. And it appears to be easily expandable if I add more raised beds. Eventually I’m going to dig a trench and run a line underground and put it on a timer. But for now I’m having to run the hose out to the garden. Baby steps, I guess.

I just priced a complete drip irrigation system from Irrigation Mart in Ruston. $110 bucks for 10 rows up to 100 ft with 13 mil drip tape. Im going to set my garden up with drip in the spring. You can also order from and have it shipped.

Looks like someone ran over my garden with a steam roller

My lemon tree is done for. I’m hoping my grapefruit tree rebounds. My 2 apples and satsuma should be ok though.

I’m looking at that kit as well but am putting it off since I don’t want to dig the trench to get the tubing to the beds.

Longtime tomato growers, I’m growing some Roma’s and Cherokee Purples for fall and can’t figure out why just the bottom leaves on my plants keep dying. I’ve fertilized well and they get plenty of water. Everything else above that looks great but on all of them they are turning brown and slowly dying. Any reason in particular? I’ve treated with Neem Oil all over multiple times. Soil is new and a mix of compost and garden soil. Need a little feedback

Just had the first of my Lemon Cucumbers pop out some fruit this past weekend. One was really small so I just plucked it off, but another one is growing near it and is getting bigger. The three plants I planted now have blooms all over them, so I anticipate I'm about to be run over by Lemon Cucumbers soon.

I've only got a couple of tomato plants left producing a little bit. However my Jalapeno, Red Chili Pepper, Bell Pepper and Cajun Bell Pepper plants are all producing like crazy, especially since it has cooled off in the evening some.

My Giant Marconi's ain't doing so good though. The summer beat them up pretty good an only made a good crop of peppers a couple times on each plant. Hoping with the cooler evenings coming, they rebound a bit.

Despite the heat, most of my fall veggies have been doing well. I did have to re-plants a couple of the brussel sprouts. I believe root rot got to them.

ETA: I didn’t take a picture of my cabbage rows because most of the plants are still really small.

I’m having same problem on a couple of tomatoes in same row. 1 plant has died. Tops are green and full of flowers. Not seeing any indications of bugs either. I’m wondering if I had some drift when I sprayed nearby rows.

Weeds ate up my summer garden, needed a break, cool weather rejuvenated me, found out that I needed to pick peppers. Eggplants and peppers every year slow in the heat but from now until first frost will produce a ton.
