What’s a decent vertical for a middle aged man?

Just checked out the CFB hall of fame in Atlanta. It has a vertical jump exhibit. Kid in front of me jumped 19in. Didn’t think he jumped high at all.

My 36-year-old “in shape” dumbass couldn’t break 14 inches. 13.8 was my best.

I like to think I’m doing pretty well fitness wise.

What would be a good number to shoot for? For just an average jump?

I’ve wondered this too. I’m almost 40. 21”-24” recently.

Shocked this isn’t a Boo Krewe thread.

At 5-10 I can jump and touch an 8 foot ceiling. My arm extends 20 inches above the top of my head. That makes my vertical leap around 6 inches

I’m 41 and about 6’ tall (white). I have no idea what my vertical is but feel good that I can still easily flex the rim when adrenaline is flowing in between basketball games.

I’m guessing there would be a significant difference between doing a vertical test without adrenaline/warm up versus with it. Maybe even up to 5 inches difference.

Perhaps.

But I woke up with sore hamstrings today. From jumping three times.

Damn baw throw in a few weeks of explosive style training every now and then. It feels good and it's fun. Keeps you functional

I'll need to add in some box jumps eventually myself

I'm sure I'll be extremely sore the next day

I've never done a true vertical test and not sure how that translates to plyo box jumps, but prescribed height for most CrossFit workouts is 20" for females and 24" for males.

I train 5-7 days / week and can hit 30" plyos routinely, but like I said, not sure how that applies to a true vertical test.

Box jumps are way different. You can bend your knees and jump at an angle or do whatever necessary to get on the box.

A vertical is jumping straight up and measuring your ability to move your center of mass in a single movement.

Best way to measure it at home would be to stand against a wall and stretch your arm up against it. Have someone mark at your fingertip. Then jump with a piece of double sided tape on your middle finger and press it as high as you can on the wall. Distance between your marked spot and the tape is your vertical.
