What do you consider a fast 5K time?

I just ran a 22:49 and holy shite, I was running as fast as I could the whole time.

I've done it in 29 or so minutes.. was awesome for me... not a runner by the way.

21:00-23:00 is perfectly fine.
I know guys that post sub 18:00's, but they're in their 20's and run 35 plus miles a week

Depends on age, but I will say 22:00 is a decent time. I quit running 17 years ago when I left the Corp. If you ran over 20 there you were considered slow.

What's a good time for 37-40 year old?

If you are running sub 23 at 37-40 I would say you are rocking it.

Just go to a big 5k race's results page and go to your age group. That would give you a decent idea of your percentile.

5k race or 5k during a run? There's a big difference.
Posted on 9/8/17 at 10:25 am to Triple Bogey
This depends on so many factors - age, number of years running, etc. I remember reading that at any typical weekend race, 10% or less of the runners will keep a 6:00/mile pace or faster.
At 22:49, you're at about 7:15/mile. IMO, that's a very respectable time. Certainly not elite, but nothing to sneeze at.

I'd be lucky at sub 1hr

sub 20's
if I'm just running for running a 23mins is good
if I want to push it 21mins is the standard I shoot for

This is the correct answer. Wait on responses around here and you will see some olympic qualifying times as average.

frick that. Just finishing is fast to me and anything under an hour is blazing imo. Of course I despise long distance running and thinks its the devil.

for your average weekend warrior? sub 21
for an ex college runner or someone like that? sub 18
22 minutes is a good 5k time and definitely puts you in the top half of the pack in your typical 5k town race, but that isn't exactly what I would consider "fast", just above average

bullshite. a weekend warrior isn't going to hit 3 x sub 7 minute miles.
i'm not saying 21 is an amazing time or anything, but somebody putting up 5-10 miles a week isn't going to get sub 7s.
ETA: my wife did one recently (i don't run competitively ever) and this little shite HS kid ran a <16:00.

he asked for "fast" not average or even above average
go to a big 5k race in any city and >21 minutes isn't going to put you in the top 10% or 15% of runners
the big 5k race in Shreveport, if you don't run sub 20:30ish, you are not getting in the top 100 of male runners
ask me how I know

I think depending on age anything under 23 for a weekend warrior/in-shape person who runs twice a week is fine.
It really depends on your training and what your body can do. With very few exceptions to run sub 20 you need to be doing at 15-20 miles a week and probably some track work as well. As a former runner in my 20s I could run sub 20 pretty much on muscle memory with no training, in my 30s I actually had to put in work to run that fast, and now in my 40s if I wanted to try to run sub 20 again I would have to get on a strict training routine that would probably hurt!

I get 15-25 a week and I'm still dying to make 24-26 5ks.
But I'm old. And fat.
