Tore it playing tennis today. Went to the ER. They did an ultrasound. Clean tear. I’m going to contact a couple of Orthos tomorrow.

Anyone have ever a similar injury? Any ideas for recovery and things I can do stay in semi-decent shape over the next six months?

I tore mine a few years ago. Go to a foot & ankle ortho, not a fricking podiatrist. As far as recovery, first you’ll be non weight bearing. You’ll have use crutches, knee scooter or I even got a peg leg contraption. Next, after your ortho clears you, is a boot. The padding on your foot will be atrophied and the bottom of your foot will hurt once you start walking on it. After the 2.5-3 month, I was cleared to take the boot off.
My vmo on my injured leg has never fully recovered from that period of non weight bearing. It’ll take some time being comfortable doing athletic movements, like tennis. After going thru it, it’s no wonder why elite athletes are never the same after.

May be worth following Georgia Ellenwood on Instagram. She's kinda cute but that's not the point. She's a pro heptathlete that ruptured her Achilles last year and documented a lot of the realities of it. She just ruptured it again while she was starting her competition season. It'd be worth following along.

Georgia Ellenwood is way more than kinda cute.

But yeah her story is awful. I can’t imagine doing a year of rehab and then popping the same tendon a few weeks into competition.

that sucks man. gonna say...look into blood flow restriction training and really work your other leg hard and if at all possible, work upper leg for the hurt leg. will keep muscle loss to a minimum. really sorry to hear about that.

My boss tore his in December of last year. It wasn't a vertical tear which I believe is worse than a horizontal clean tear. His calf muscle has atrophied so bad and he is struggling to get his strength back in the calf muscle.

2-3 months till you can put weight on it regularly and then rehab rehab rehab.

His rehab office was having him do the blood flow restricted workouts like LSU777 is suggesting.

It's incredible how quickly the muscles atrophy without regular use.

Good luck.

Ruptured mine at 27...so, a little over 10 years ago. I was playing indoor flag football - it felt like someone hit me with a baseball bat.

PT wasn't bad. You'll do a lot of stability training. I stayed playing sports after (mostly soccer). I'd say the recurring ankle sprains were the worst part, because none were minor sprains. The muscle atrophy is real.

Best of luck on your recovery.
