Take WD40 and hose down the shifter while clicking it up and down. The grease Shimano uses hardens and locks it up. Usually the WD40 will flush out the old grease and get it working again.

I did that. Maybe a few days later now it'll be loose.

welp... that was stupid. knew it wasn't my weekend when we did a 3hr recon ride friday. body needed a break but pressed anyway.

wasn't raining at start but after about 2 hours the line of the cold front rolled through and we couldn't see 20ft in front of ourselves in the lead group. from there everything blew up. lead group turned into a few smaller groups. i ended up by myself for the next 30ish miles. thought i was about to get struck by lightening trying to get across a freshly logged area.

mile 50ish to about 85 was straight red clay logging road mud. i stopped to dig the mud out of the bike at around mile 70 point and my buddy rolled up to me with a broken rear derailleur and we made the decision to find the most direct paved way back. we had no more tolerance for the mud. 20 miles of mud later we found the hwy and rolled 9 miles back in. 6 hours of hell.

not my kind of race....

bike is currently in many pieces.

I think 1x is kinda stupid outside of MTB but that's just me. Also the amount of mud of your frame and components is giving me anxiety lol

1x on a "non-adventure" gravel bike is absolutely stupid. Every gravel race I do around the Carolinas includes climbing, flat, and pavement. I consciously run a 2x on this bike and always will. All the bikes in the back of that truck have a 2x on them. I have zero desire to have 5 tooth jumps between gears.

Didn't catch the sarcasm the first time...

bro... it was so bad. that bullshite clay mud was full of rocks and gravel too so frame was super scratched. it's in pieces now so i went ahead and rubbing compound and ceramic waxed the frame. This frame is painted like a bowling ball so it's poppin now haha

Good to see some MTB action on TD.

I did my 2nd MTB race of the season yesterday out here in SoCal. Competition level is pretty high but held my own well enough.

Signed up for a big gravel race (Crusher in the Tushar) and Leadville (2nd time) this year. About to be spending a lot of time on the bike.

Anyone here have a tri bike and can make recommendations for a beginner?

I'm a decent rider on a Trek road bike.

Considering doing an olympic this fall and then shooting for a half ironman next spring.

I'm asking for any recommendations you have on an out-of-the-box tri bike for a beginner looking to take the next step from 20 - 21 mph rides on a road bike (which pretty much tax me, although I'm getting faster) to faster and longer rides on a tri bike?

I shopped for and bought a gravel bike for commuting about 5 years ago. I can't recall a single one I looked at having a front derailleur. Front derailleurs are dead to me. I just never see them anymore on any trails up here. When I see one now, I just assume the bike is old.

Unfortunately not but will when I can. I spent the full week before Leadville last year at 10k feet and that worked plenty well. What I’ve read is you either want to be there 7-9 days in advance or show up less than 48 hours in advance(what I’ll be doing for Crusher). Your body kind of ebbs and flows into acclimation and sometimes it’s better to just shock the system before it knows what’s going on.

I ride a 1x on my gravel rig as well and it works well enough for road rides. Only issue is down steep hills it spins out around 32mph. Has stopped me from coasting north of 40 but would lose the group if I was riding with guys on a 2x.

I've gone single speed on everything except my full squish bike. I use my gravel rig to commute and the ride into downtown drops 800' going so gains 800' back but over 13 miles so its fine.

Buddy and I looked into doing the BReck Epic this year. We rode one of the stages in September and both decided to skip it. People who finish that race are absolute animals.

I think you know the answer to your question... you dont need a $12k Shiv, but it's probably time to start looking at entry to mid level Tri bikes. You can always throw clip-ons on your road bike but if you are planning to get serious about Tri I would just take the plunge and get a dedicated Tri bike.

yea that's exactly what you should do if you can't acclimate... get up there and send it like the next day before the body realizes what's going on

I would look at the used market lot of good packages out there on Online Swap Meet (Facebook group) for 2-3k. Can’t go wrong with the flagship tri bike from cervelo, trek, or spesh. If you get super into tri in a couple of years I say that’s when you start going after those marginal gains of the newest frame, wheels and etc. If you are super tall or short then that’s when you might want to do some research on which frame might fit you best
