I ride a 1x on my gravel rig as well and it works well enough for road rides. Only issue is down steep hills it spins out around 32mph. Has stopped me from coasting north of 40 but would lose the group if I was riding with guys on a 2x.
i have a set of road wheels i will throw on that bike from time to time if i dont feel like riding the road bike for whatever reason. i'll spin out constantly on our group rides on a 1x. i spin out at 34 with the 2x as it is

Buddy and I looked into doing the BReck Epic this year. We rode one of the stages in September and both decided to skip it. People who finish that race are absolute animals.
I can’t imagine getting sick of riding singletrack but that might be enough to do it. That’s A LOT of riding for 6 days straight.

Pretty awesome time in Northwest Arkansas this week. US Cup racing starts today with folks like Christopher Blevins and Kate Courtney in town. My son got to ride and hang out with Christopher Blevins (fresh off his win of Cape Epic) on Monday night, because my wife had a post-ride function with him at her store.
Sadly, we have an Enduro race in Eureka Springs this weekend, so we're going to miss most of the spectating for the XC in Fayetteville.

Signed up for a big gravel race (Crusher in the Tushar) and Leadville (2nd time) this year. About to be spending a lot of time on the bike.
Yea you are. Those are big league events with the altitude.

Front derailleur? What year is this?

I post this as I have a 1x on my gravel bike and full squish. But on my racing hardtail and tri bike, damn straight I still run a front.

doing an olympic this fall and then shooting for a half ironman next spring.
Which half are you looking at?
As far as tri-bike, get on as many as you can see which one feels the best. This is just my opinion but with a tri bike, when doing a sprint/oly super aero is ok for an age grouper. When you start getting into halfs and fulls, comfort is key. Very few age groupers can hold super aero for roughly 3+ hours and then feel great on the run. But it's going to take a few fittings and rides to get it dialed in.
just getting into it, it's hard to go wrong with a Cervelo P-series. It's been the top bike at Kona for about 15 years now. You might have more price range variety with Specialized, Trek, Cannondale, which all make decent TT bikes. Quintana Roo is a top selling tri bike because it's mostly tri specific. It's all about geometry and specs.

Just back from two days of the boy racing in Eureka Springs, AR.
He ended up 6th in Pro Open. It was a pretty stacked field with some legitimate professional racers in it, not just "local pros." His goal was to ride within himself, not have big mistakes, and see how he stacked up at that pace and get a good idea of where he needed to improve (without having to factor time lost on mistakes/crashes into the equation). He's bummed that he missed podium by 1 spot, but happy that he achieved his goal and has a better idea what he needs to work on for next race.
Speaking of, next race is a pretty big one of Big Mountain Enduro at Mount Nebo.

Son and I did Bo Bikes Bama. Did the 20 ride but I was the guy running 2.8" plus mountain bike tires in a single speed wearing matching hawaiian shirts with my son. 32t oval with 18t cog and I spin out around 17mph at ~110rpm. Averaged 15mph which is slow for a road bike but quick considering the equipment. My son was on a 90's MTB that was gravel bike converted. Bo passed us at a redlight just 2/3 mile from the finish. I head his unmistakable voice say "It's clear roll through" as they went through the light. We chased his little group down and rode in their draft the last 1/2 mile. Wife got a great picture of us with Bo totally by accident as she didn't realize it was Bo Jackson in front of us.
Single speed fat bike converted to 29+ bike porn.

Did my longest outside ride of 2023 yesterday (2.25 hrs) looks like it is only going to get warmer from here. Looking forward to smashing 5+ hrs through the mountains soon

Racing gravel again this weekend. Hopefully it's drier than the last 2. Short one at 55mi but almost 5000ft of elevation.

Posted on 4/26/23 at 2:36 pm to crazyLSUstudent

How did your race go?
Eventful lol…. Didnt run my USWE pack cause it was only 55mi. Well, my bottle cages decided they wanted to launch bottle rather than hold them. Lost my carb bottle somewhere in the first 15mi, which caused me to have to fill my last remaining bottle at the aid station. Wouldn’t have stopped at that aid station with 2 bottles. Then about 10 minutes later that bottle went flying. Had to turn around and go get that one…. That first bottle had 100g of carbs in it so that messed up my nutrition as little (had to rely on gels). On top of all that, blew through 2 turns.
13th overall but should have been top 5 or 6 without all the nonsense. Either way still a good race

Ah yes the ole bottle eject. Happened to be a couple of times. One time I was headed down a slight hill (2-3%) and I hit a bump and ejected my bottle. The bottle after ejecting wedged itself between the chain stay and wheel locking it up. I luckily managed to keep it up and come to a stop. Felt lucky that day. Also it took me way to long to figure out a fueling strategy for longer rides and races. Working up to slamming 100g/hr of CHO
