Entered my first mountain bike race since the late 90s last weekend. Raced with the single speeders. It was one of the biggest groups in the field and the single speeders always put in some of the fastest times. 29 miles with 2300ft of elevation was 3 laps. Poor nutrition strategy on the 2nd lap had me fighting cramps from mile 23 in. My single speed bike is a 32lbs steel Enduro focused bike so I had no hopes of competing with the guys in much better shape riding sub 20lbs bikes. I put in respectable lap times and would have placed or won a couple of the geared categories in my age group if I hadn't entered in the single speed race. Lots of fun. My son and his friends beat out another group to claim the top podium top in the Jr Team division.

Nice! Impressive results on a heavy bike with that kind of mileage.

We're headed to Tennessee Nationals at Windrock the week after next for my son to race Enduro. It's going to be brutal.

We just got back from Tennessee Nationals. My son's first enduro race. Good one to try right? Was there with 4 of his friends all 8th graders.

We've ridden Windrock before. But not all the lines in the race. Went up Thursday to hopfully preride on Friday but weather didn't cooperate. He pre-rode stages 2-5-6. When the boys started pre-riding 6 late Thursday the bottom fell out of the sky. Not the state you want to do while it's a river. It was brutal they said.

His goal was to just make it to the bottom of each stage in one piece. Got a DNF after stage 6. The rear wheel of his Druid kept packing with mud locking up the rear wheel. Part way down something lodged between the tire and rear frame guard. He tried for several minutes to try to dislodge the rock with a stick but couldn't ever get the wheel to move. Ended up hike a biking off the mountain to get a DNF.

Learned a lot. Had fun. After that experience all the other SE Enduro races should feel like a breeze.

He chose a hell of a race and venue to "try out" enduro. Bike cleanup was brutal every night.

Our first time out to Windrock as well. Conditions were definitely... Windrocky. He was able to preride on Thursday, and my kid was getting pretty comfortable on the steeps. When the rain came, though, that comfort level ended. Steeps he can do. Mud he can do. Steep mud though.. He did a lot of crashing, especially on Stage 1 (bad way to start the day), Stage 3 and Stage 6.

Ended the day in p20 on Day 1, then climbed up to p12 by the end of Day 2 (U21 Open). Humbling experience that we'd like to chalk up to age (which definitely plays a part since he's 15 racing 21 year old), but two kids close to his age (TJ Hyser and Noach Couture) both got top 5s (my kid is good friends with TJ and was able to beat him at Nationals). There's definitely no substitute for spending a lot of time at Windrock to find success at Windrock.

Onwards.. have a 2-day Arkansas enduro race coming up in April. Then the BME at Mt. Nebo then going to Glorieta for a race in May. Going to try to spend June getting some training time in out East for Nats.

Also: anyone else a little shocked by the level of poverty in that area? Oliver Springs wasn't so bad, but we stayed up toward Rocky Top... and wow. The number of brutally rundown double wides with huge piles of trash all around them was pretty shocking (even for an Arkansas boy).

I assume you mean Stage 4? Stage 3 was on the XC side. We had riders switch from open to sport specifically to avoid stage 4. After seeing stage 6 I'm curious what stage 4 was like.

Oh yeah. I meant stage 4. 3 was fine, just pedally. He said 4 was okay. Slick and steep. He only had one big get off on 4, but it was big enough that it cost him a minute or so in recovering his bike as he ended up like 20 feet down the hill from his bike on the crash.

He felt like he was getting no traction and realized his shock was still locked out from the climb when he got to the bottom.

Day 1 was a big day on the bike for sure. That last climb and long run to end was just brutal for the Open class.

You all going to race Nats at Rock Creek? I guess if your kid isn’t racing age 15, he can’t do enduro at Nats yet.

Amateur here. I have a Gary Fisher Marlin, probably 15 years old. I need to replace the front break (not disc), and I could probably replace the front shifter too, it is really random and hardly ever takes me to 3 in the front. I have to push it 50 times, and it magically catches for some reason. I mainly ride on the road, 10-15 miles, hills, just a morning workout. It's heavy, the climbs are a great workout. I'm not hitting mountain bike trails anymore. Maybe I will if one of the kids gets into it, but even now I have slicks on it to reduce drag.

Thoughts on fixing it up vs. just getting a hybrid or just a lighter bike in general? I can fix it, I know the front brake isn't expensive and is easy enough. There are so many barely used bikes out there these days though, I could get something nearly new in the $300-$400 range.

Pads or the entire cantilver?

I assume you have tried adjusting the cable tension.

Entire cantilever, one is seized up. I have lubed the mess out of it and taken it off and apart, it just doesn't rotate on the cylinder. Still grabs because the other side pulls in, but it pulls the rim a bit doing that.

I've tried. The bottom shifter lever just doesn't catch for some reason. Not sure if that is because too much or too little tension, I've tried going both ways.
