Crit went alright. Got stuck behind a guy who had a mechanical, which dropped me from the lead peloton. I jumped in with some guys who had been dropped. Out sprinted them to the line for 20 something. Hit 1200+ watts for the sprint, so I was happy with that. I actually had to find another gear in the middle of the sprint and I kinda blew their doors off once that next gear dropped in.

A general question, how does one get into bike racing? I come from a running background so none of this USA Cycling membership stuff, no classification, you just get your arse on the line and run. Is there a good guide on how it it works from the sign up to the rules to the etiquette of racing?

Basically the same concept. Buy a USA cycling membership, sign up for a race and then race. You will default to Cat 5 since you have never raced before. If you have never ridden in a group before I would recommend doing that for 4-6 months before jumping into a crit or road race. It can be very overwhelming if you haven't done it before and dangerous.

Did 2x15 ftp today and I think I’m sticking at that length. I thought that I’d be able to hit 2x20 based on other workouts I’ve completed, but now that just sounds miserable.

Got 32 and some change in today at 3pm. Hot AF outside, although caught the mythical tailwind on the back and it was a glorious 24mph pull for a while.

Completed my first Triathlon yesterday. Selling out to average 18mph on a leisure/hybrid bike with people flying by me at minimal effort on road bikes was extremely frustrating, and the extra effort crippled my run. Will be getting sized asap and will either come with questions or the purchase.

To brighten everyone's morning with a "laugh at the amateur" moment, I have never participated in a bike event and for some reason did not think to bring my own water bottle. Looked around while walking it out after the swim, saw everyone had one, and knew I was in for pain. Thankfully it was a sprint, and now know for sure that mistake will never happen again

And a tri bike is soooo much faster than a road bike in those conditions.

I had a long ride two months ago where the wind was in my face going (SW) and coming (NW). I was audibly cursing at the wind at one point until I realized the absurdity of what I was doing.

I dusted my speed goal this weekend. My goal was 17.5 and I clocked in at 18.2. It was a good ride.

I think the tailwind recovery shakes have been helping me get a little more substance each morning after my ride. They’re not very tasty though. Here are the nutrition facts for one shake, which I usually have along with 4 oz overnight oats with 4 oz milk and a little honey for sweetness:
245 calories
43 g carbs
1 g fiber
39 g sugar (part of which is the electrolyte solution)
11 g protein

All in all, my post-ride breakfast looks like this:
492 calories
76 g carb
5 g fiber
578 mg sodium
60.5 g sugar (most of which is electrolyte solution in the Tailwinds recovery drink)
20 g protein

I drink at least 1 gallon of water per day. Is this too much sugar?

Shadow Creek Ranch just south of Houston. Thankfully finished early enough to beat the heat. The run was awful and I may not have made it if it was much hotter

Ya I think that’s what I mean when I keep saying road bike. I’m gunna go into it with an open mind and a low budget so I can’t be too picky.

That's one of my bigger complaints getting into triathlons....the price of even starter bikes is kind of insane.

For someone like me who jumps in all the way, it wasn't that bad. I am an engineer who can nerd out on mechanical stuff and am relatively handy, so I'd buy nice stuff, upgrade, etc.. It was half the fun. So spending a few thousand was something I was willing to do and luckily had the means to do it. But for someone just trying it out and not sure how far they want to dive in, it's insanely expensive to make that jump to get serious about it.

Keep an eye out on FB marketplace once season ends. Ive made two 12 hour round trips for our bikes (one to Mandeville and one to Dripping Springs, TX from Bossier) where the price outweighed the drive.

This. Walter White and I both got our bikes off FB marketplace for pretty good deals. I never would've bought a tri bike if it weren't for FB marketplace...

I got 105 ish miles in the last few days. 23/50/30... Working on my fueling on these longer efforts in 100 degree feels like temps. The humidity has been lethal; but still 100 times more enjoyable than running in this shite!

Hoping to make it back up to St. Francisville later this week for some more hill work.

Thanks y’all. Stopped by bike barn and it looks like a 62 road or an XL tri is my best bet. Likely slim pickings but I’ll keep an eye out on the local shops and fb marketplace
