Thanks. When I'm no longer morbidly obese, I'll credit you.

So about macros. We're looking for 70% of calories from fat and 30% of calories from protein, right? If we believe fat is 9 per gram and protein is 4 per gram, should we be generally good if we just focus on making sure we get 1 or 1.2 grams of fat for every 1 gram of protein?

I guess the question is how explicitly strict must one be to see benefits?

I’ve entered the season of working 12 hour shifts as well as coaching football for 3 hours a day. 6 hours is pretty much the maximum sleep I can get Monday-Thursday with 5-5.5 more likely. I haven’t lost a pound in two weeks, in fact I’ve gained 3 despite being extremely strict in my carb intake.

Sucks...

Be very strict on carb intake. Eat mostly fat. Try and limit protein outside of red meat, eggs, and cheese. Meaning do not eat: chicken, protein shakes, tuna, etc.

Are you tracking your macros? If so how are you doing it? Are you being honest with your inputs (I.e. inputting even the smallest of snacks)?

1 meal a day, usually around 7p before going to work. That’s typically a meat like roast with broccoli. I take nothing to work with me. Just water and coffee. At most I’ll have some eggs and bacon when i leave the hospital.

It’s due to lack of sleep. It’ll destroy your weight loss even if everything else is right.

Yes and no. I find the cortisol, sleep, and weight loss connection to be somewhat tenuous.

I mean hell at SERE school students go 28 days on like 12 hours of total sleep. Never heard of anyone not losing weight myself included.

Idk. Something about my body and working nights. Every time I go on nights, it’s typically for a year or two. Every time, I gain weight. When I get back on days, the weight comes off. It’s frustrating.

Quick update on progress, it took a little bit but I finally hit 60 lbs since January. Nothing changes if nothing changes!

For instance we occasionally do an easy summer time dinner called cheese dreams. It's a single slice of bread with a slice of cheese, slices of tomato, and slices of bacon on top cooked in the oven until all toasted up eaten open face

Trade that bread for an egg or avocado. It’ll change your life. Also, after a couple of weeks, your taste buds will change. You’ll find that some foods are insanely sugary. I can’t eat ketchup anymore which is sad but good.

I've been staying around 50g max carbs per day for the last 2 months. I've lost approximately 6.5% of my body weight in that time frame. Could be more, but I had two vacations in that time frame where I ignored my diet and gained roughly 8 pounds on each of them. That weight came off after 5-6 days of being back on the wagon.

First time I did keto I had faster results, but was my carb intake was under 30g per day. That was not sustainable long term for me, what I'm doing now allows me to eat some bread, or potato, or some real ice cream or cake (people retiring at the office and birthdays have been plentiful lately) and still lose weight.

So the short answer is it depends on your goals. I would recommend more strict to start with, so that you have better results, which helps keep you motivated.

Yes and no. I have so much going on that I get knocked out of it all the time. Mainly, I like beer. I’m maintaining during the week and eat clean when I can which is most of the time.

My life is about to settle down with school starting back, and I’ll kick it down after this weekend. The best time of the year for me is New Years to Mardi Gras. I can lose easily then. I only have 25 lbs to go. I’m going to try to drop 10 during football season and be ready for the last push.

Have you listened to Mathew Walkers talks on sleep? He makes a compelling case for sleep being the most important factor in health and future predictor of disease. Talks about sleep deprivation and bad food choices, paired with impaired insulin/ glucose metabolism, a viscous cycle.

41# down since 3/1

Insane amount of energy and making great progress in gym for being 65 years young.

Completely off all 5 of my Type 2 meds, A1C is 5.7

Hoping to go off the statins next

I haven't had more than 30g net carbs in a day since I started. Have done 3 7day fasts, some 5 days and usually eating one meal a day. I really like the keto lifestyle

So, apparently taking prednisone will knock you straight out of ketosis, despite your carb intake. Am I the only person who didn't know this?

I only took it for about 3 days. How long will it take for me to get back into a state of ketosis assuming I am following the 20 carb, 70% fat protocol?

I had some issues when I received some allergy shots, but it was due to increased appetite. Depending on how fat adapted you are anywhere from 2-5 days.

Bringing this back to page 1

Started the keto diet 8 days ago and down 9.8 lbs. I assume this is mostly initial water weight getting purged and just calorie reduction since I am still searching replacement foods.

What is easiest way to tell you are in ketosis?
