YouTube - Joe Rogan - Chris Kresser

Chris Kresser (former raw-vegan type) does a superb job of civilly and politely tearing apart the vegan propaganda Netflix film (funded by pea-protein investor James Cameron).

Summary from shownotes (doesn't even begin to describe the awesomeness of this episode--it also has some great tools for analyzing nutritional dogma, generally; I like the break down of protein bioavailability too):

quote:

If the purpose of this film was to say, ‘It’s possible to survive on a plant-based diet and here are some athletes that have done so,’ I wouldn’t have had any qualms with it… I take issue with it because it went a step further and said a plant-based diet is the optimal diet for athletes and everybody else.” – Chris Kresser
“If you take someone who’s been on a standard American diet… and they switch from that to a plant-based diet, well, of course, they’ll feel better. They’ve gone from eating absolute crap to real foods.” – Chris Kresser
But as time goes on, vegans often deficient in protein and a variety of micronutrients (i.e., vitamin A, vitamin B12, calcium, zinc, and iron)
Vegans kill animals too
Industrial agriculture kills far more animals (insects, rodents, mice, and birds) than eating cows
Chris recalls a study that found between 35 and 250 mice are killed per acre of land cultivated for agriculture (in total, ~7.3 billion animals are killed every year from plant agriculture alone)
Greenhouse gases emitted due to meat consumption are largely exaggerated
A standard American diet that includes meat is NOT the same as a whole foods-based diet that includes meat
It’s mostly a myth that consuming chicken, fish, and red meat increases your risk of cancer
Raising cattle doesn’t waste as much water as you think
The typical claim: 2400 gallons of water is used to produce a pound of beef
But what you don’t hear: The vast majority of this water, even from feedlot beef, is rainfall (only 6% is groundwater)
For pasture-raised beef, 97% of the water used comes from rain. The other 3% comes from irrigation (typically, about 280 gallons is used to produce a pound of beef – this may sound like a lot, but keep in mind this is less than the water needed to produce a pound of avocados, rice, almonds, or sugar).

ha. I'm sort of there too, but this Rogan was really good. It wasn't some paleo/keto jerk fest at all.

Just a really good case study in the limitations of nutritional science and the confirmation bias/echo chamber world "in which we're livin'." Live and let animals die so we can live.

Yep, started watching clips of this then had to dive in to the whole thing. The PowerPoint slides sucked me in. Very well laid out after the Netflix Doc admittedly had me intrigued.

As someone who is now mostly on a plant-based diet, I think the biggest takeaway from that movie is that you can be a high-level athlete while not eating meat. I'm stronger now than I ever was from pounding away at chicken breasts and meat. Granted my training now is stronger and better and I've accumulated strength from those years but I definitely haven't gotten weaker which is nice.

lulz

for one you have consume even more calories

and lets not forget everyone in that film had the disposable income to eat the best quality plant based food and buy the best plant based "meat" on the market

not the mass produced processed plant crap that most people would buy

Why would you have to consume more calories?

To make up for ground in the macro nutrient split

Meat is much more caloric dense than vegetables

They even talk about it on the podcast how calorie consumption would go on average for everyone if we all were plant based.

What's the most entertaining way to see them get owned? Watch the doc then the Rogan and Biolayne dismantling or just go straight to the end?

I don’t understand how calorie intake would change. You would still burn the same amount daily and during exercise.

You can eat the same macros with vegetables as you can with meat. You could change your macros as needed, high protein, fat and carb or vice versa.

You would have to consume more food, not more calories.

Macro =/= Calorie

Some foods require more calories to reach that macro goal

You can reach the same macros with a plant based diet. You don’t need meat to hit your calorie and macro goal.

1g protein = 4 calories
1g carb = 4 calories
1g fat = 9 calories

Doesn’t matter whether it’s animal or plant.

No shite but you have to consume more calories to reach those required macros bc meat is more calorie dense than plants.

Not to mention all the supplementation you have to do while going fully plant based.

This was proven wrong like 20mins into the podcast saying it doesn't matter where is comes from.

When comparing a fricking PB&J to a Steak

“Meat is more calorically dense than plants”

That’s such a vague statement. Like yeah, a pork chop has more calories than a head of broccoli lol but there are tons of calorically dense recipes you can eat.

You can and will reach the same macros if you plan your meals accordingly.

I’m a meat eater, but saying you can’t live off of plant based thrive off of plant based is a lie.

What does this mean? There are several different cuts of steak? Peanut butter is healthy fats and protein, a steak is saturated fats and protein? What’s the comparison?

Plant based works for some people not all, the supplementation to make up for deficiencies when cutting out meat can get expensive.

Lets not forget a majority of the vegan fake meat is processed garbage.
