Turkish get-ups

Still never done one of these. Yesterday was my first Jackie. First time I've completed a girl name and didn't immediately hate every female with that name.

get ups can be very challenging. not a big fan of them being part of a wod because people tend to focus on finishing quickly and can get sloppy. IMO they are better as a stand alone strength exercise

Jackie is one of my favorite girls but I love to row

I really like Jackie (Helen is my favorite). I was pissed last time we did it because I put the bar down at 30 on the thrusters. Once I finished, I realized I could have done the wod unbroken. That's my goal for next time.

Through the workout our coach kept emphasizing to take your time and be slow, and don't compete for a low time. The running was just to get you winded. Although, the getups winded me pretty good as well But they were a lot harder than I expected. My left shoulder was hurting pretty good by the end of it, was worried I may have pulled something.. but I hit it hard with a lacrosse ball, then when I got home I used some tiger balm and some ice last night and it feels fine today.

I am starting to enjoy it more and more. I feel a lot better in the last week or so.. I think being deficient in vitamin d was holding me back, I was just exhausted all the time. I feel a lot more gung-ho about Crossfit and everything in general.

I enjoy it way more than I thought I would. Still, the idea of competing depresses me and makes me less happy about it. I get so winded that i simply can't go on, and have pretty much terrible times across the board. That, and I can't do things like TTB CTB kipping pull ups, double unders etc.

Not everyone enjoys competing, it's all good. However, it sounds like you're comparing yourself to everyone else. While the Open is a competition, most people don't use it as a "me vs. everyone else" competition. View it as a "me vs me" competition. I know I won't score highly, and I know I won't compete with the best. That's fine; I want to have a barometer for my own progress.

Check out last year's scaled WODs:

Your coaches should be able to help you scale further where you need to, like CTB pull ups. There's only 2-3 things I'd have to outright scale to another movement to get through.

if that aspect bothers you then don't do it. ive competed in crossfit comps many times and I don't have a taste for it anymore....the open is a good way to track long term progress because they'll repeat wods sometimes or just to use as benchmarks. go into it with the midset of trying to get better and have a good time, im sure there are peeps at your box that feel the same as you. remember were all in this together and none of us are going to the games as an athlete

It is like anything else, you have periods of really engaging it and periods of just grinding thru.

I do the work. I dont do the rest: mobility work, nutrition, sleep rest, supplements, etc. So if you really start going hard with 4-5 workouts a week and some supplemental lifting/skill work it can really wear you down.

The Open is an eye opener for me every year. Last year was a year where I had really not been putting in the work and 17.1 was announced and it was in my wheelhouse.

I shite the bed on it.

Hell, Jackie was yesterday for Alx and I. I had a 9:36 time. My PR is 8:06. So I am in no way ready to do well (for me) in the open workouts...I know this, but I hope it serves as motivation to watch my diet over the next couple weeks and the 5 weeks of the open. 7 weeks of doing the right things can make a difference by the end of the open workouts.

The open is fun when a lot of people buy into it at a gym. If it's just a few people, its not as fun for me. Two years ago, we would run heats of 10 or so starting at 5 and it wouldn't wrap up until 7-8. it was super fun. This year, I doubt I will even sign up because not many people are doing it.

It's neat to see your progress on the state/regional/worldwide levels. Every year it seems the numbers have increased, which is cool. I like looking at my percentile rank on everything to see where I really stand and sit in awe on how good the elites really are.

What gym do you and Alx go to?

Southbank...it is a smaller gym, but air conditioned

I like it, we are pretty low key, a couple of crossfitters that became games athletes began it. So you get a glimpse of what the elite guys do, but we are comprised of mostly 30-60 year olds just trying to stay active.

Dont get me wrong, we have quite a few really strong athletes that train there, but they dont really get into the competitions and stuff.

Nice, the gym I go to is air conditioned as well. It's smallish, but nice.

I'll have to check it out next hunting season, I hunt near Alexandria.

Just let me know, get that free guest pass

On that same note, I like the fact that it is heated just as much. Grabbing a freezing kettle bell is worse than no AC.

I visited a box once where I felt like my hands were going to fall off.

Do they promote it? Will I start hearing anyone talk about it?

As excited as I briefly was about it, noon's workout brought me back down to earth. Damn near DFL.
