I heard Huberman talking on Rogan about it the heard Huberman discussing with Susana Soberg - so I just decided one am to try it for a minute and the next day I did my three minutes and haven’t stopped since

- I’ve never felt such a consistent burst of energy - and it seems to last several hours just as he described

- not sure about the brown fat stuff - but I do feel tremendous

I take my real shower at night - but in the morning after my run - I do the three minutes (timed with iPhone stopwatch) - funny though I love the shower and the post shower feeling - I still have a moment of despair - every time right before I turn the shower on

Was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on how I could possibly get the water colder than the 58-60 degrees it seems to be at each time…

My son and son-in-law swear by cold plunges/ice baths, but I'm just not a fan of cold water. I get the bronchitis and pneumonia too easy.

Give me a sauna and/or jacuzzi every time.

I use to do ice baths right before going to sleep. I’d shower first, then an hr later get the ice in the tub.

Slept like a rock when I did it.

If god wanted us to do things like cold plunges, your momma's womb would have been 45 degrees F. It wasn't, get thyself into a womb-like environment.

There's pretty solid science out there debunking ice baths, but if it makes you feel great and find it helpful then go for it

I have posted them a bunch, menno has done couple reviews on them and so has Layne. But if they make you feel better, sure do it, just know it’s placebo to an extent.

Cold plunges offer no benefit, it’s all mental, it’s been proven time and time again. If it helps you, go for it

I'm not advocating for cold baths, I've only done a cold plunge in Colorado at a natural spring and it was just for the experience. I hate cold water, give me the hottest shower/bath possible.

But pretty much every pro sports team has cold plunges and ice baths on hand for their athletes. There might be some articles out there debunking it, but there's also some solid science backing it too. Teams don't just provide their hundreds of million dollar athletes do treatments without full research.

I think my statement was not specific enough, and you're right. My intention was to say that there's no proven mental or long term health benefits as some people try to claim. However, ice baths can reduce acute inflammation, which can be great pain relief for in-season athletes, who put their body through hell. For that same reason, those looking to build muscle should avoid doing it regularly because it can potentially stymy muscle growth, which relies upon some inflammation.

As always, references at the bottom of the article from Layne and his crew.

for the record, not good for athletes to reduce pain, tends to cause further damage

and yea it can reduce inflammation...but so can advil and it blunts true recovery.

Generally less acute inflammation would reduce pain, make you feel better short term. Robbing Peter to pay Paul, y'know. You may be blunting true recovery, but athletes will do what it takes to get back on the field and ice can do that for them.

Huberman's specific claims about the impact of cold exposure on dopamine (I thought from studies) is just wrong?

yea well even the doctor who created the original RICE formula has come out and said he was wrong and we should not ice unless you have swelling.
