Life and weather got in the way the last 30 days. I usually cycle at least 25 miles a day. The next 180 days aren’t likely to let up.

Considering adding a Smart Trainer to the mix to add some flexibility for those rough days. Would like to keep it under a $1,000 and would be awesome if way under. Thinkrider (AliExpress) Wahoo, TacX?

Yep, I bought a used Wahoo Kickr on eBay a couple of months ago. Think I paid $800 for it. Been enjoying it & it was nice to get a discount. Great backup for when it rains or to just be able to ride early morning/at night and not have to worry about getting hit by a car.

Thank you WW. That looks like the most accepted brand and model.

Question: why do years of Wahoo Kickr’s seem to matter so much when I look on EBay?

I’m actually not quite sure on all the technical differences between all of the versions. Mine is a Gen 3 Wahoo Kickr and it does everything I need it to. Paired it with Zwift for $15/month subscription. One thing I really enjoy is being able to see the power numbers, especially since I don’t have a power meter on my bike. One thing, you will definitely want to get a fan or two blowing on you while you ride. It’s crazy how hot you get otherwise

Here is a little comparison I found. Hope this helps

I use a Kinetic dumb trainer with the InRide watt meter. It gives me pretty accurate power feedback but I wish I could have the terrain changes. So I've looked at upgrading to the KICKR core or a used KICKR

I used a TacX one last year when I was training for my to-be-cancelled Ironman. I’m not the worlds best cyclist but for 30-90 min rides it did fine. Biggest thing is the wear and tear to the back tire that you need to be mindful of when you take the bike on the road.

Ive got a kinetic wheel-on smart trainer.

Its pretty fun to ride on Zwift with the auto resistance. Get an Apple TV and put it on the big screen. The blue Tac-X trainer tire is a great addition so you dont chew through road tires.

Found a 2018 for a little less than $800 close by. Seriously contemplating.

Wondering if I can get away with riding during meetings where I don’t have to speak or be in camera, lol.

Go for it!!

Forgot to mention, there’s a great Facebook group called Tri N Sell It. I’ve bought several items from there. All kinds of used bikes, trainers, and whatever gear you’re looking for.

I have one. Completely transformed my fitness no doubt. My FTP prior to the trainer was 235. Now I am up to 285. I use Zwift and Trainerroad. Racing Zwift is pretty enjoyable and fun to put the fitness I have built in trainerroad to use.

BTW I would recommend wheel off smart trainer, like tacx neo, wahoo kickr, or Saris Hammer.

I paid $1,000 for a used Tacx Neo II.

No regrets whatsoever.

I personally wouldn't waste the money on a smart trainer unless it was direct drive ("wheel off"). I don't really ride anymore, but I had a Tacx wheel on smart trainer. When it worked, it was nice. But I always had connectivity issues. And it really sucked when I was training for an ironman and 3 hours into a ride, the resistance just completely went out and no way to even set it an a consistent value without getting off the bike and trouble shooting a computer. I sold it quickly and bought a dumb direct drive trainer. The quality of the direct drive was more valuable to me than the smart capability. You can still do Zwift/TR on a dumb trainer (if you have a power meter). So I guess that's my input.....smart trainer is great, but I wouldn't cheap out on a non-direct drive. Wait until you can swing those.

Well I’m back on the hunt. Deal became sketchy and it wasn’t an 18.

I have a wheel on dumb trainer and yeah any new one will need to be direct drive/wheel off.

BINGO! Thank you.

I placed my order. Now I will be able to ride at lunch without feeling guilty.
