The quick summary?

Lowering the weight in a controlled manor is just as beneficial as lifting the weight. Interesting for sure.

You go to the gym, you pick things up. But maybe, as the second half of the famous line goes, the focus should really be on putting them down.

According to a recent study performed by researchers at Australia's Edith Cowan University (ECU) and published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology, those who just lower weights can achieve the same results as those who both lift and lower them, despite only doing half the apparent work.

This latest study," he continued, "shows we can be far more efficient in the time we spend exercising and still see significant results by focusing on eccentric muscle contractions.

How do they suppose you get the weights back to the starting point?

I thought this was well known? Controlling the weight on the way down is equally as important as controlling it on the way up.

Yeah I think a better way to say it would have been to say that concentric and eccentric exercise are both beneficial.

Yeah the eccentric part is always where I feel that burn but we didn’t need a massive study for this

Negative training is a proven method. No one disputes that

The reason why it isn’t in widespread usage is the need for a training partner at every workout.

Most of my workouts are solo.

Yeah, I saw this posted to the reddit Tonal section. Tonal focuses a lot on this as a promotional piece and a reason to buy the product.

I think most of us knew the benefits of this, but I think people starting out don't know this or understand it.

You hire someone to do that for you.

Sounds like that Super Slow/HIT (as opposed to HIIT) fad that was going around a few years ago.

Lesson here, kids, even if you're just using a very low weight like this cat, you always want to use collars and spotters. Protocols only work if you follow them every time.

Yeah, but nobody is ever going to be impressed with how much weight you lower.
