Same, getting out of bed or up from sitting at a desk for a while is a bitch.

I feel totally fine when I run though.

I can’t move at all. Pain levels up around 8-9.

When you say sciatica, are you under the impression that it’s actually a peripheral nerve issue at the sciatic nerve or an L5-S1 radiculopathy?

My wife swears by tart cherry juice. No idea of the validity of that, but it works for her, whether placebo or real.

Start with a medrol dosepak or prednisone with quick taper to calm down acute inflammation, but get an MRI so you know what you’re dealing with.

Any weakness in ankle flexion/extension or big toe (bringing big toe up towards head)? My personal threshold for surgery is weakness, I can deal with pain/numbness.

Just extreme pain and numbness. I think the weakness seen at the doc today was mostly due to pain.

This shite came on like fire last week, after a lead up of what I thought was a tight hip.

So no acute trauma or Injury? Are symptoms reproduced with coughing or sneezing?

No injury, no trauma. I’ve had some pain in the lower back, upper arse on my right side for quite some time. Especially after shoveling snow or something like that.

Yes, cough does hurt, not always though, as the vast majority of my pain is in the hip and lower leg.

Hip X-rays were clear. Back X-ray showed narrow in one spot in the lower back.

Prednisone may help calm down the inflammation but either way you need to start opening up your hips and strengthening the low back to help heal and make yourself more resilient for the future. Prednisone is unlikely to work more than once or twice. Give yourself at least a year of trying to fix it through exercise before considering surgery. I found that rest only made things worse. Walk a lot and do whatever you can to make sure you're getting good sleep. Just about any PT is going to treat you with the McKenzie method. This has never worked for me but I guess it must work for some people. I can't recommend Athletic Truth Group enough. There's also a guy on instagram @lowbackability who learned most of his stuff from ATG and has taken it to another level. His programming has pretty much healed me.

I took a shite load of melatonin and Gabapentin to try to get some sleep when I was at my worst. This is just a bandaid and won't permanently heal you, but if it's necessary for sleep then that's where it has value since sleep is so important to healing.

I got this around the 19th/20th and could barely walk.
Went to Dr- got a steroid shot and precribed Cyclobenzaprine and diclofenac. Cold/hot pack.

Feeling better 11 days later but it was a slow recovery process. I did some pt and chiro.
Heard other say deep tissue massage helps also.

Gonna chill another few days before I hit the gym. And I usually stretch every day

Sciatica symptoms can be brought on by a number of things. The most prevalent that I see is Piriformis Syndrome. A tightening of the Piriformis muscle can lead to impingement of that sciatic nerve. Even if you believe it's radiculopathy and it's coming from your spine, start with Piriformis stretching followed by clamshells. Stretch the piriformis after the clamshells as well.

If it's your piriformis that is the offending tissue you have to realize that it externally rotates your leg. So more often than not, a person is either sitting, driving, walking, or exercising in that externally rotated position. If this is what is happening to you, find what activity you are doing and stop the excessive external rotation.
