I can jog 2 miles in about 20 minutes. For what age/fitness profile would you say that's pretty decent?

Basically how I old/fit would I need to be for that time to elicit this kind of response:

You're probably doing better than 90% of Americans.

The winner of the men's 75-80 age group in the Mercedes Half Marathon this past weekend in Bham had a pace of 10:13/mile for 13 miles.

How long have you been at it? I just started jogging again and that’s about my pace for 2 miles now. A year ago it was much quicker.

On & off for a couple of months. Trying to get more consistent. Weather is a factor

Are you doing anything other than just running 2 miles?

Yeah, lifting weights 2-3 days a week, moderate intensity. Running around coaching my kids as well.

No I mean in regards to running?

If you want to get better at running, need to incorporate some speed work and possibly a longer run.

2 mile for about 21 mins is where I'm at. Started jogging last year but have been on and off since. Running is frustrating cuz i suck at it, but when I started I couldn't even run a mile.

I don’t even like driving 2 miles, let alone jogging, so you’re doing better than me

Ah, I see. Yeah I think you’re right. I’ve been meaning to do some sprint work once a week. Someone told me a long time ago “train slow, be slow” which does make sense.

Nothing wrong with ten minute miles. If you want to go faster, train that way. If you want more distance, start adding 10% more as appropriate. BTW, I've always thought the two mile mark is when you transition from "this is horrible" to "I can actually run." Perhaps you are right there and just need to push through to the next level.

Objectively, that’s not very far or very fast, but I’d offer that it’s plenty far and fast enough for health. My advice as a runner who’s been kinda fast and also kinda slow is to ignore everyone. Run to taste; compete against yourself.

You really have to hit various levels to get faster. You want a fast 5k time? You need some long slow runs in the 10k range to build base cardio while allowing for active recovery. Then you need shorter intensity workouts. Varying from true fast/sprint intervals, to maybe a 30 minute run with a few 5 minute intervals at targeted 5k pace while the other time is that really comfortable slow pace. Also, losing weight helps. They say for every 10 lbs you lose, you gain ~20 seconds per mile. So if you've got 15 lbs extra on you, there may be 30 free seconds per mile there.
