ON is releasing their new version of the Cloudsurfer and Varsity is helping host a party for them at Barracuda on Government Street, the recently new taco place. Overall, Jenni says the reviews on the shoe are great (most positive reviews since Cloudmonster was released) and ON is allowing runners to test out the shoe for a few miles. All are welcome to attend. Starts at 5:30 tonight.

I didn't think anyone actually ran in ON, I thought they were "lifestyle" shoes. This is based on every single person I have ever seen wearing them.

They’ve historically gotten terrible reviews because they’re typically very firm.

The Cloudmonster and this new version of the Cloudsurfer have sort of flipped the script

I actually just grabbed a pair of the Cloudmonster but only have one 3 mile run in them so far.

I’ve never met anyone that owns these shoes and has had a positive thing to say about them.

I know some guys who run in them and swear they're good. I've never tried them so idk

Bilbeau, did you go to the Varsity event to try them?

I did. Incredible shoe. I've tried both the Monster and now the Surfer. I would consider buying when sale time rolls around because I can't justify paying full price for most shoes unless I'm in an absolute bind.

Monster a little more stiff but responsive enough to be a durable lightweight trainer for speed work.

Surfer had enough bounce to it where I felt like I was getting back the energy I put into each step. Cushioned enough and responsive enough to be a solid everyday trainer. We did an out and back with some uphill sprints. I got a lot of response on the uphill. Great thing I felt was that I had almost no ankle soreness at the end (did a little over 5 miles) and I've been low on my miles these last few months.

They mentioned a few other things about how the dye process in the colors used about 90% water and they puller data from 1,000+ runners and what they look for in a shoe instead of making several variations, all this adding up to a more sustainably made shoe. Didn't really mean much to me but it is nice to know they're environmentally conscious.

Do I think most of the ON shoes are just worn by country club people?
Absolutely.

However, I would suggest yall to give ON a shot with either of these shoes.

They're my favorite sneaker I've ever worn. So comfortable and so easy to put on. They definitely don’t last as long as I would like though.

My favorite shoes ever are the kyrie Irving Air Force ones

Like he got all based so they were on sale for like 25 bucks and I like high tops because they’re like the tall boys of shoes

The colors faded on them really quick and they kinda fell apart though

How they compare to Hoka?

I hate HOKAs because once you wear them you pretty much have to stick with them. HOKAs have very minimal heel-toe drop, around 5mm MAX compared to the average 10mm.

I know people that love their HOKAs and will never go away from them, but they are fully committed to the brand. I wear Nike & Asics. Found models within the brands I only use.

At the end of the day, it's all dependent upon who is wearing the shoe. HOKAs don't work for me but they work for a lot of other people. The same can be said about the new Cloudsurfers and every other shoe.

I see what you’re saying but don’t think that’s true. It’s good to mix up drop unless you are super sensitive to it. I play soccer once a week in 0 drop cleats, do my daily training in 10mm drop Nikes, and speed workouts in 6mm drop New Balance. Also, how your foot impacts the ground can change dynamic drop…so a 10/12 can run like a 5/8 or vice versa. Doctors of Running did an interesting podcast about that subject.

Which further proves my point that it depends on the runner.

I use a specific shoe for speed work that doesn't feature a 10mm drop. The same shoe I use for those will not be for my 10+ mile runs. Fact is that HOKA does not have any shoes that would be comfortable for how I run. I could never run in HOKAs for the rest of my life.

I'm also aware that form is much different when jogging vs. sprinting. Again, each shoe is vastly different than the next, so comparing brands really doesn't make a whole lot of sense, unless you are comparing specific types of shoes between brands.

Comparing one brand's neutral shoes vs. another, stability shoes, etc., those would be much more accurate comps to talk about.

I agree.

Maybe I just misunderstood this statement:

I’ve had Hoka’s and did not stick with them. Drop didn’t affect my decision.

To each their own. Generally from what I've seen, there are a lot of diehard HOKA fans out there once they get into a pair.

I don't think this has anything to do with the drop. Hoka's are trendy and are only slightly less of a lifestyle shoe/brand than ON.

For me it was because they went dead at 215 miles. I had the Rincon which, to be fair, is known to wear out fast. Otherwise, Hoka’s tend to run narrow and they insist on using basic EVA foam that wears quickly. Just not worth the money imo.

Anyway, sorry to derail the thread. I like nerding out on shoes

I think the Cloudsurfer is going to be to On as the Novablast was to Asics. Lots of athletes landing on podiums sporting On’s lately will help too.
