As a distance runner, is it bad to be a heel striker? Is it something you can train out or are you a heel striker primarily due to one’s build/hip tightness?

I started as a heel striker. I’m now a forefoot striker as nature intended. Contrary to what others have said, I didn’t find the transition too bad. It did take time. Heel striking is a product of modern footwear. You can’t heel strike running barefoot. Can’t do it. And yes, this opinion is unpopular and in the minority.

Yeah, Cajun Cup humidity was not expected. I ran a 48:17 but I feel like I left something on the table in this run. Still, very happy.

My friend that just ran a 2:45 marathon in NYC is a heel striker. "Born to Run" is a great book, but it's not the end all be all, yes modern shoes have made us more of heel strikers, but modern shoes are also the reason we will one day break the 2 hour marathon...

+1

Same as anything with running: if it works for you and doesn't get you injured, great. I've seen so many things come and go throughout the years that I'm convinced you can do whatever you want in this sport. Barefoot shoes, max cushion with a carbon plate, heel strike, forefoot strike, double threshold, Maffetone, the list goes on. Do whatever you want if it works. Tons of pros heel strike and they've got orders of magnitude more resources and talent than us. By the same token, some of them prance so much that their heel never touches the ground for the whole marathon.

Several women in the Sat AM group that do this. Basically, land on their toes and their heels never hit the ground. I have strong feet and ankles, but there’s no way I could do that.

Ran a local 5K this weekend. Since it’s close to the house and I know the organizers, so I run it every year. Checked the results for the last three years:

2023: 24:07
2024: 23:01
2025: 22:11

I barely beat a 68 yr old man. Dude was an absolute unit. Looked like he stepped off the cover of a CrossFit magazine. Wish I had asked him about his routine.

Knocked out another 40 mile week with the long run today. Did 10 and some change in 90 minutes

The threshold workout this week was 8x1km with 60 seconds rest. Averaged around 6:44 per mile, last one was at 6:36 pace. Ya boy is finally getting into shape

I smashed my 10k PR last weekend, so I'm feeling pretty good again. I love my superblast 2, but I'm itching for a carbon plate for some reason.

Update from 3 months ago: Took 45 days off running completely, did clamshells, banded side steps and diagonal steps daily. Started with super light band and worked up to medium, Started with heavy band today. Around the beginning of October I ran 1 mile 3 times a week and have been adding a little distance every week. Just did a 5.5 mile trail run Sunday and feel great, no pain during or after at all.
Thanks to everyone here for the tips, it seems like a break from running, stretching and some strength work was the key.

TLDR; Don't run through ITBS, rest, stretch, strengthen.

I bought a pair and stopped running

I've owned them for 2 months and still haven't run in them

Is anybody running the New Orleans turkey day race? I think I'm out this year; too quick of a turnaround between racing and getting to the in-laws for Thanksgiving lunch. It's usually a fun one though. Full of cross country kids who are still peaked from the state meet this week so it's an arse-whipping for the older crowd

I’ll be there pushing the double stroller. Been hyping the girls up for it for a couple weeks now, so I’m sure they’ll hate it

Doing the Armadillo Dash half marathon this weekend and Turkey Day Race next Thursday.

For those of you that have run the New Orleans area races how do you like the event quality put together by Lazy Hound Racing?

I’ve only done the Laketown 10 miler like 3 years ago, and reading up on it I now see that Chuck has since retired and handed everything over to Lazy Hound. So I guess I have no experience with them lol.

I’ll report back this weekend.

One of the worst things ever did was try to run through flareup of IT band syndrome. Ended up having to take off about six months before I could comfortably run a mile. Since that time I’ve tried to start listening to my body.

Had several good months of 25 to 35 mile weeks up until about two weeks ago. Had a gout flareup in my ankle and had to shut it down. I have never had gout before it was one of the most painful 48 to 72 hours I’ve ever experienced.

Has anyone here done the Armadillo Dash Trail Half in Norco?

I’ve never run a trail in my life. Curious what to expect

Edit: St Charles street car line with an outside loop of Audubon Park is the most “trail” I’ve run.
