The less hard stuff you do the better. You don’t want to do zero hard miles but it should only be just enough hard to keep your legs and lungs sharp. Week of our state meet I typically only have ours get in maybe 3-4 hard miles total that week. Everything else is easy.

In unrelated news I did my first workout in a while yesterday. 3 x mile at 5:36,5:38, 5:43 (can’t remember the last rep for sure but was somewhere around there)

Bottom of my shin is now hurting some so that’s fun…

Skipped the long run this weekend to take a camping trip with my son. Ran 4 miles Friday morning and then had a two mile hike that afternoon. Ran 3 miles in the park Saturday then headed home to avoid the storm that passed through that night.
With fresh legs and cooler temps this morning I had 8 miles total. A .5 mile warm up, then 5 mile repeats with a .5 mile recovery between each one. Not that the times were crazy fast, but a good workout for me.
Mile 1 - 7:13
Mile 2 - 7:17
Mile 3 - 7:25
Mile 4 - 7:24
Mile 5 - 7:22
Recovery paces averaged 9:46.

Ran LA Half this January in 1:54:38. Next race is the Zydeco Half in less than 4 weeks. I'll be happy with anything sub 1:45:00, but aiming for 1:42:00 if I can.

Had a quality workout today building towards a 10k in March. 2 x 2 mile @ 7:25, 1 mile @ 7:05, 800 x 2 (7:05 & 6:48). Jogging recovery between intervals.

It’s been awhile since I’ve run a race or even worked out with any intent. Initial goal was to go sub 50 minutes when I first started a couple months ago now I’m tempted to try and go sub 45.

Comparison is the thief of Joy. Pedro was a d1 track and field / cross country athlete - it's not a competition

Based on that workout, sub 45 should be in the bag.

You hear about the half marathon world record that just got broken? 56:42 4:20/mile. That one blows my mind. I don’t think I can hold that pace for a quarter mile let alone 13.1.

i'm not sure that workout indicates sub 45 being "in the bag". He doesn't mention effort level so maybe it was zone 2 but also doesn't say duration of jogging recovery. 45 min is 7:13 so on the surface it doesn't math.

so many records broken in 2 week period. everybody questioning doping violations now.

I would agree with you that I do not feel that sub 45 is in the bag. Recovery period. We’re about 3 1/2 minutes of jogging.@ 9:25-9:30 and walking recovery for a minute and a half between the 800s. If I had to run it yesterday, I do not think I could’ve hit it, but it seems like something that could be attainable if things were to come together perfectly.

I have run sub 45 before although it’s been two or three years ago, with a PR at 42:10.

Math doesn’t quite math, but it’s close. Was basing it on my own experience from last year, though everyone is different. I ran a sub 44 10k last April coming off a half marathon in January. I did a total of 3 short workouts in the months between at similar paces, averaged maybe 14 miles per week.

I met in between and just linked my Strava for a bit on this thread since I trust the current active posters on here

Did my long run today:

The biggest problem with doing your long run during an "extra long lunch" was the 12 calls I got during it. If I got a call during one of my pace miles I just ignored it and called them back though, boy were those hard
