Quick update: managed a half marathon PR yesterday at the Big Beach Half in Gulf Shores - 1:37:11. Beat last years time by almost a minute on way less training and, as is well documented here, constant sickness.

One of my girls was having some respiratory issues around 10:30 the night before the race which turned out to be Croup. Had to rush to the ER with her to get steroids and didn’t get to bed til 1:30 am. January has been a total shitshow of a month, getting that PR was the one bright spot

Wish I could’ve gotten more miles in training and more VO2 workouts. Both this year and last year I look at my data and think “I probably had more to give”…I just don’t know how to give it. I’m thinking I could have ran my first 5k a bit quicker and held the pace the rest of the way.

Alright, i have a Marathon again... 7 weeks of training here we come

Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach. They have plenty of pacers and it's fairly flat, the worst section from what I can tell is at mile 24 when you are going across a boardwalk with a terrible Headwind.

This will be the flattest Marathon I have ever run, need to go get myself some new shoes sooner rather than later

Haven’t ran in years, usually just strength train. Used to run 10 min miles at max 3-4 miles.

Can I do a half marathon in 11 weeks? Just downloaded Runna app. Starting me off with 3 runs all over 3 miles. Seems daunting haha.

You can probably run-walk it. There are a lot of out of shape people at every race, so someone who keeps up some sort of fitness should be fine to at least finish. If a 3+ mile run 3 times a week seems daunting then you won't be running the half from start to finish though.

I think Runna is notoriously tough to start but is supposed to adjust as the algorithm sees how you perform.

Yes, yes you can. The Half Marathon is the perfect distance. I could have someone not in shape run one (and decently, not super slow) in a year. For someone who is in somewhat shape - 10-12 weeks of training.

Easily. Just depends on what your expectation is. Are you gonna go sub 2hrs? Probably not. Is the goal just to finish and have fun? Absolutely.

1.5 mile repeats today
7:03, 6:58, and 6:58

I did not want to put on my running clothes, I did not want to walk out the door, I did not want to get in my car, I did not want to get out of my car and run. I don't know what this funk is, but I need some motivation or something, cause I'm just not feeling it right now

First workout done on the Runna app: 2.75 miles at an easy pace (just under 13 min/mile).

Goal was 15, but I couldn't go that slow without walking. Felt good overall—gotta stick with it! Next up: 2.5 miles of intervals, then 3.75 miles on Saturday.

Does anyone here strength train and run? How do you all typically do your splits? I'm not really worried about upper body workouts overlapping, but my legs will be shot after a big leg focused workout.

Anyone use an Apple Watch and track VO2 max on it? I picked up running in November, and have improved my endurance and speed significantly, but when I looked at VO2 max on the watch it shows a pretty sharp drop off since October, and continually trending downward the last two months.

Doesn’t make much sense to me. I figure it’s a bug or an issue with what they use to calculate it, but it is concerning to see that continually trend downward. Anyone else seen something like this?

If you dont keep at it, you will end up slow like myself. I struggled with mile repeats yesterday to stay around 7:45. So theres that...
All jokes aside, I think we all have days or even weeks like that. Register for a race that you havent done before for some motivation.

Garmin has my VO2 at 51. My actual VO2 Max test has me at 56.4. I highly recommend the legit treadmill or bike test for VO2. I have mine done annually.

About 650 feet of elevation gain, which I think qualifies as "slightly hilly". I am used to running flat so my legs are really shot.

I am shooting for a 1:50 half in April, and I think I can do it. This was a really slow gradual run.

Very reasonable goal.

For this area that is extremely hilly. Most of my runs are less than 20 ft of elevation gain unless I venture to the trails at kisatchie.

Just ordered my first pair of Adios Pros! (Got the Adios Pro 4 since my size wasn't available for the 3) We shall see how they work out, went on and bought them now because the 4s seem to have a sizing issue, so going to get my size dialed in before my race in March.

Has anyone ever done the New River marathon outside of Boone? It looks like a pretty cool one.

So after a little research I would recommend skipping this race unless you already live in the mountains. The elevation of Boone is 3,333 which would knock off about 6 minutes on my Marathon time (I'm around 600ft elevation) which is substantial and would make me feel a lot worse towards the end. Just something to think about, but yeah, elevation can really affect you running wise
