My biggest thing I have going for me is I can drop 8 miles in very close to @ 1 hour and my boss is super cool with me running at lunch. The only times I'm away from my kids for a run is my Saturday Long runs and I'm almost always home before both are awake. I would never take time away from my kids to run... I started running so I could live longer and see them grow up, no reason to be away from them.

I'm very lucky with my job is how I'm able to pull it off. I'm also fast enough to get some good milage in, in a very short amount of time. It used to be I would only be able to get 3-4 miles in during lunch, that distance has gone up as I've gotten stronger

13.14 miles @ 7:54 /min

5 1/2 at around 7:30 (3 sub 7:20!!)

This was a great run, starting to really get a feeling for where I'm at fitness wise

17 this Saturday. Hot, humid, and hills all conspired to make my zone 2 pace for shite. This workout called for 1/4 mile zone 3 efforts every mile. I like that workout.

12min/mile pace. 141 HR. 2000’ of elevation change.

Officially 1:32:37 for my half debut. I'd been fighting with some IT band tightness since mixing in VO2 workouts the last few weeks of the plan. That lead to a slightly more aggressive taper, mostly by cutting my long runs down to something manageable. Popped 2 ibuprofen about an hour before the race, had half a gel on the start line just in case. My goal was to go through the first 8 miles conservatively in around 7:15/mi, then rip whatever I had left. Worked out really well. First 10km was around 7:11/mi pace, then miles 8 to the finish were all sub 7 (including a 6:40! last mile).

Really happy with how things turned out. The wind was pretty tough in the later miles but I tucked in and pushed through. They had some really good cheering sections and funny signs. One near Tiger stadium said "you're running better than the government"

For now, a down week and some PT to get my IT band right. No more halfs for a while but I'll be at the CCC in April.

Oh my being at Louisiana today made me want to get back after it. I’m not young and seriously slow as hell BUT oh how much fun I used to have. Kids and life got my running sidetracked .. maybe it’s my turn to start again.

Congrats to all who ran today.

This was me last year. Getting in the miles has more to do with an understanding/accepting spouse than the kids themselves. I wake up at 4:45 to get my weekday runs in, have to walk on eggshells to get anything longer than 8 on the weekends.

Get better runs on the weekdays than weekends at this point with two under 3

My oldest used to ride 14 miles in the stroller, now I am lucky to get 3 before she wants to go to the park

Man, that is awesome. You absolutely crushed it. Weren’t you at one point hoping you could hit 1:35?

Same. I tried the double stroller but just can’t do it, too heavy and pulls to one side which is a bitch to correct for any distance.

Yep! I didn't want to set too lofty of a goal and I've never been a "good" distance runner (here we go again with that discussion ) so 1:35 felt right. When I was clicking off low 7:00s and it felt like a jog, I knew I could turn the screw a little bit and end up with something good.

Yesterday I did my customary tune up half marathon 5 weeks out from my standalone marathon on February 23. The weather conditions were as bad as you can hope for a half marathon at any time of the year let alone January - 72 degree start temp with a 72 dew point. Felt like running through a steam room sauna. Plus 15-20mph winds which made the humidity slightly less shitty to deal with at the expense of slower speed.

I did a slow warm up jog at 10:00/mile pace for 10 minutes and my heart rate was off the charts high for a run that slow, knew it would be bad.

I was actually in first place at the end of the first mile but my heart rate was well above what I was looking to stay at and knew there was no way I was going to be able to keep that pace. I stayed with the lead group for the first half but fell off and stayed with the chase group the rest of the race but in the last 2 miles fell off from them.

Finish time 1:31, 11th place overall and 3rd age group. 7 minutes slower than my PR and 3 minutes slower than the off the bike half I ran at my 70.3 a month ago. Averaged a HR of 173, 2 beats higher than the 171 HR I averaged during my 1:24 PR. 8 beats higher than my 70.3 1:28 run where I averaged 165 BPM.

Winner was 1:21. Race director said it was the slowest winning time by far in the 18 year history of the race which regularly sees winning times under 1:10.

Seeing people say the conditions of the Houston Marathon were bad yesterday make me laugh. I'll take 34 degrees over a dew point of 72 any day of the week. Absolutely miserable.

Didn't exactly instill a lot of confidence for my stand alone next month. Was hoping to go under 2:52 but I am re-assessing.

Also broke in my new Alphafly 3s... mixed reactions. They felt great when I could actually run with enough power to drive them...

Three things that jack my heart rate:

1. Heat/humidity
2. Hills
3. Caffeine

Even something as simple as green tea before a work out can put my HR 10 bpm or more outa whack. I avoid it before workouts now.

45 mins on the slide board last night as a cross train recovery. Tempo work out tonight.

Meanwhile I show up to a race with a cup of coffee in my hand

ETA: this was slightly a joke... I do drink coffee on race day, but it's 2 hours before to get everything "moving"

Zone 4 workouts last night. I don’t do much in this zone.

1 mile warm up in zone 2.
Intervals of 1 mile zone 4. 3 mins zone 2. Repeat 4x.
Cool down.

Zone 4 is 170HR. Pacing was 7:45, 7:55, 7:55, 7:50. Felt great. Cold out there.

I did my 3 minute fartlek workout again yesterday. This time I focused on completing them without giving up and succeeded. Ran the first 3 a little slower than last week and recovered better in between.

Kinda tempted to do some 400m repeats next week, but will probably do 1k or 1 mile repeats. I might also go on and pay for v.02 and see what they give me

When you do 400s and 1k or 1m what pace do you aim for and how long do you recover in between?

I'll give my 2 cents. For all 3 distances I'm doing threshold pace, so about 6:55/mi. 400s I'd do 30-45 seconds standing recovery. 1ks I do 1 minute standing. Mile repeats I'd stretch it out to about 1:30 recovery, a little more if you need. It should feel controlled if you're doing the right pace.

As a rule of thumb, you usually do 5:1 work-to-recovery ratio for threshold stuff.

i could just be misunderstanding your statement be seems you run 400, 1k and 1 mile all at same pace ,if correct what is the point of running a 400 at same pace of 1 mile. I would assume the threshold pace for each distance is different and increases with shorter distance.

Maybe a slight difference in pace, but the main driver is different recovery. The shorter the rep, the less recovery you get, and the more reps you do. Of course there's a place for faster short reps but I was only touching on threshold workouts. I usually like to decide the total working distance and figure out how to break it up from there. For example, if I want 6km of work I could do 6x1km at 6:55/mi (so like 4:18ish per km rep, I think) with 1 minute recovery, or I could do 15x400m at the same pace but with 30 seconds between each.

I think the shorter reps feel more manageable, especially early in a training block. As the weeks go on I like to move towards longer reps or continuous tempos. Imo you have to build that mental toughness of running your T pace with no breaks. In the last few weeks before a taper you would add in VO2 sessions to sharpen up that leg speed, so something like 10x400m at :90 each but with a much longer recovery than you'd do for the threshold reps.
