Right but there is a caveat. It takes several to improve speed and it's like building blocks but it's also a balancing act. I use a 5 in 3 method when training. 5 speed workouts in 3 weeks. If you're just starting, I'd keep my workouts limited to striders and hills until a solid base was built. You can do hill repeats and striders every week while you're building.

@ TR my goal is to finish 7th or better regardless of pace so I can podium for the race series.

Maybe. When's your marathon? I ask because I'd prefer to do the Hydration Celebration which is the 11th of May and a much bigger race.

Edit you said gonna not wanna. The answer is no I didn't plan on it because of the HC.

My marathon is May 26, so I figured if I’m gonna do one this spring I should sooner than later

I dunno. Even if you did the hydration celebration it would be like treating it like a speed workout. But yeah if it freaks you out, earlier is better. I have to to the HC because it was my first race in 15 years. I need to do an anniversary race.

Edit: Kind of a shame because I looked at last years times for the Jackrabbit and I could win that race.

Welp, I definitely didn’t make it to 20 today.

Kinda disappointed but I’m gonna try to blame it on still having a little illness lingering and only running 4 miles last week.

Goals are supposed to be said out loud right ?

My half is May 18th and I'm going to train and race for under two hours.

Progress has already been made with increasing the mileage but I'll have a more accurate training pace & feel at my April 20th 10K.

The biggest change so far --> I told my neighbor, who I do weekend runs with, that run/walk was no longer working for me. Our entire training was walking once every mile for runs longer than 5...big reason why I stalled @ mile 8 in The Woodlands.

While we're at it, I'm gunning for sub 40:00 at the CCC on 4/20. Good week this week as I got in a tempo, speed session, long run and 34 miles total for the week. All the while working 6 12's. I'll take it.

Planning to hit the gym tomorrow to do some weight training, so I'll probably just hit some hill treadmill training since thunderstorms are likely anyway. Will probably give this workout a shot, which I pulled from McMillan.

1 Set: 90 seconds @ 6 percent grade and marathon pace
1-minute recovery @ flat jog
1 minute @ 7 percent grade and marathon pace
2-minute recovery @ flat jog

Do 6-10 sets.

That would be killer. I would love to run a sub 40:00. Are you in "C" Group? I haven't ran the CCC in quite a while, so I'm out of the loop. Do they stagger the starts between groups?

Ran a quarter marathon race yesterday and managed to win my age group. 45:35 official time for a 6:57 pace. Still not where I want to be, but I'm getting there.

Then I worked in the yard all day hauling around rocks and mulch. Today I'm sore af. It sucks getting old.

I am just hoping for a poster this year. Looks like 43 was cut off last year for the poster

Ran a 5k in Houma Saturday. 20:14 was my time for 6:29 pace

Crazy thing is that got me 3rd in age group (30-39)and one of the overall winners was in my age group so wouldn't have got anything if not. The 20-29 age group winner was 26:40... Found that odd

most of my 5ks are with my son, so not that competitive (albeit, he's pretty good for being 9.) last year he and i ran about a 25 minute one. he won for 15 and under and i won for 30-35. if i had been 29 or 36 i wouldn't have even got top 3.

I applied for the C corral when I registered but we’ll see. Cut off for it is 45:00. The only qualifying race I had was the Tiger 10K in December which I ran in 45:45. So, technically I didn’t qualify but I was close. It asks for projected finish time and I put in 44:00. So, depending on how strict they are as to where I line up. Really hope I get in C, as I’d rather avoid weaving in and out of lard asses in tutus at the beginning.

Yeah, 40:00 is pretty lofty but based on the recent 5K of 19:15, I think it’s in the realm of possibility for sure. Still felt like I could have kept pushing at that pace for a while.

There is a corral D this year so not quite as bad as past

What did you run at LA? What was your 10k split there?

I haven't run CCC in years because of this and the walkers pushing strollers. I hear it's better now, but I just don't care enough to bother. I prefer smaller races anyway.

There used to me little to no monitoring of the corals at the CCC. It was embarrassing the amount of strollers and walkers that would be starting at the same time as those expecting to finish in the Top 500.

Yeah, that's probably where I'll end up. Not really expecting them to bend the requirements for me.

Ran the La. Half in 01:41:20, 10K split was 48:37.
Mardi Gras Mambo 15K on 2/16 was 01:08:49
Most recent race was the Shamrock 5K in BR last weekend at 19:16.

I've mentioned it before, but I feel like I went out conservative in La and the Mambo. I've only been back training steady for less than a year, so still trying to figure out my body/capabilities. Alot of it is mental like I think we've discussed before. I just finished that book Endure that I think you said you've read, where it touches alot on the mental aspect.

I totally agree, but the CCC fits in perfect with my schedule. I'm on vacation at the time, so should be well rested. I figured I'd sign up as it will likely be my last race of the Fall/Spring season. Not looking forward to the logistics/crowd.

I was asking because I emailed them my LA half results and I had a 1:37 and a 45:10 10k split so they gave me a waiver for Corral C

I had a qualifying 5k at a recent race that was online and the Garmin data, but they preferred the LA splits..whatever floats their boat, I just wanted to start with the faster group to try for a poster

Good info. I may email them, can’t hurt. Although the only thing I have results for within the parameters is the 5K, other than Strava stuff. Do you have the email address handy by chance?
