Could definitely be this and/or you have more than a fair amount of talent. Your 3:30 1st attempt Full and 5K time on (relatively) low weekly mileage (if I recall correctly) are pretty impressive. As far as the mental aspect that book “Endure” that I’m reading draws good points for both LT and mental aspects of training/racing. Interesting thus far, I’m about 1/2 way done.

I am actually reading that book too right now. Only a few chapters in so far

I think low weekly mileage is probably accurate compared to people in here. I ran 1-3 times a week during marathon training for about 30-40 miles a week tops. I kind of slacked back before that 5k but was pretty well trained from my full and LA Half. But I also still train 7 days a week. I lift and do crossfit days that I do not run so its not like I am sitting on the sofa just taking off. I also have read a lot of the mental strength books (Can't Hurt Me, Relentless, Chasing Excellence) that give me a different outlook when I show up to train or race (this is why I think that may have something to do with it)

I was an athlete in high school, but not a runner. So as far as talent goes, maybe, but it is still relatively new to me so I don't like to count on that.

I just want to keep pushing and improving

Got stuck in a board meeting late so didn't get home until around 7. Just did an easy 2 around the neighborhood. I am pacing someone for RnR half this weekend

I’d say so. Actually I didn’t even realize you could use Strava without one

There’s two guys in my group that just use their phone. They always have to pull them out and stop them when we take breaks at the top of the hill. Just go buy a $100 forerunner 35.

So I stayed up till 1 AM drinking with a colleague having a career altering discussion last night on the river walk in San Antonio.. despite knowing good and well I had to get up and get some mileage this morning. I knew I would be sloggy so I tried and push it only to look down and find myself pacing about 10:30 pace. Decided to punish myself and push the rest of the run pretty hard. Pace never got too fast but it was one of the hardest efforts I’ve put into a run.

Combine that with 100% humidity and the alcohol demons were excercised.

Did the BF% (12.4%) & VO2 Max testing this am. VO2 Max came back at 44.9, with a max HR of 178.

I don’t buy that because I have seen it get to 188 before. And last time I was at 46 ish and I know I’m more fit now than then. This will probably be my last time doing it. Too many easier/cheaper ways to get it yourself and it isn’t that serious to pay for it again. Ah well.

What method do they use for BF? 12% is pretty low!

Are you suppose to taper off the mileage leading up to the test? If so, you probably got an inaccurate reading due to the mileage you've put in over the last week or two.

DexaScan.

Not sure on tapering BnG. I’m pretty taxed right now I’d imagine. Still kinda reeling from our 17 mile sludgefest and haven’t had much time off since then.

Do you have any admin rights that allow you to see how many miles the TD group put on in Strava in January?

I do not know the answer to that. Stand by red leader.

ETA: doesn’t look like it. I might be able to on the website but I don’t have my laptop with me. I’ll check it out.

Ran an easy 5 yesterday at about 9:12 pace, though hip flexor was still tight at least there was no pain. For some reason, my watch did not automatically post my run on Strava as it normally does. Pisses me off. I have the Strava app on the watch. Tomorrow I think I will record the run directly through Strava.

Yep whenever weather is under 60 degrees. Started about 10 years ago when I started getting calf strains in the winter. Has seemed to help quite a bit. I like the ones by McDavid.

I don’t want to sound callous (I’m sure I’ll push through) but, how much time have you spent training in your v02 max zone? I ask because it’s an incredibly difficult thing to improve and a lot of your baseline comes from your genes.

If you haven’t been hanging your arse over the ragged edge every once in a while, that might be to blame for your score. I mean your heart should be ready to explode (hyperbole) if your in your v02 zone.

Edit: Did some research and fatigue is a factor that severely adversely affects the test as well. Bummer man.

Yeah I rarely train in it and pretty much my thinking from research also that alot of it is genetics. I really felt pretty damn spent at the end of the test yesterday, but was expecting my HR to be much higher. As mentioned, I’ve seen it almost 190 during a hard workout before (unless my watch is off, which is possible also).

As far as fatigue, yeah I should have planned around the test better. I hit 29 miles (which is usually a week for me) in 4 days leading up (with 17 in one run and a workout (7 miles) the day before the test).

Ah well, lessons learned. Doesn’t change much in the grand scheme, just further cements the claim that I don’t have a clue what I’m doing. Lulz.
