I have GERD. Specifically laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). I’ve had it for a very long time, and it’s the primary culprit of my insomnia issues. My poor sleep habits are - I believe - the only issue standing in my way of achieving my fitness goals.

My reflux is the silent kind. I might not even know I’ve had it if it weren’t for poor sleep quality. I do clear my throat a lot. I can clear a good chunk of phlegm out of there at any time of the day. I have excessive thirst at night that isn’t quenched unless I chug huge gulps. I don’t believe I’m actually thirsty or dehydrated but aggravated by the reflux.

My doctor prescribed Prilosec about a year ago, but I don’t like taking medicine. After some bad bouts of insomnia the past week, I decided to take it. This is only my 2nd day taking it, and my stomach cramps are almost unbearable. I’ve read this is a common side effect.

I just want to fricking sleep.

I’ve lost a lot of the extra weight I’ve been carrying around. Not much. About 15 pounds. I could shed maybe 5 more to hit more of an ideal weight. 10 would put me square in the middle of that BMI zone. So I’m not sure it’s the weight. I rarely drink alcohol. I’ve been cutting out refined sugars and have limited my refined carbs.

I read that a Mediterranean diet has as much success tearing LPR as proton pump inhibitors do, but I’m over spending my nights awake googling about acid reflux.

Any suggestions?

Just throwing this out there - not saying to do it or that it would help, but it is interesting. First thought to fix GERD is to decrease stomach acid by using things like PPIs and H2 blockers. Sometimes GERD can be due to not having enough stomach acid. Some functional practitioners are prescribing HCL to increase stomach acid to treat GERD. Just an interesting aspect that is totally opposite of conventional treatment. Plenty on google if you want to learn more. Hope you get it figured out.

Diet, diet, diet. Eat naturally fermented food like sourdough bread (homemade or from natural local baker), kombucha, etc. Stay away from anything processed, including breads that you think are healthy. You have to keep your gut biome healthy. Maybe supplement the above with some probiotics.

I say this as someone who has been through all of what you have described.

I’m scared to try fermented foods because they’ve sent my GERD into overdrive in the past. I can barely handle beer without feeling like my upper esophagus is going to explode. Kimchi once made me literally believe I was going to die.

Fasting has pretty much ended my acid reflux.. and I was diagnosed with GERD.

Take it for what it's worth.

I didn't read the other other responses... SIAP.

You actually need acid to trigger the esophageal sphincter. Your sphincter is remaining open because the content of your stomach is more basic than needed and the sphincter is not getting the message to close causing acid to reflux. Drinking lemon juice with honey or apple cider vinegar (diluted) can actually help you get homeostasis in the acidity of the stomach. Go on a pubmed binge to see the science behind the suggestion. Using bases (PPIs) or even tums are a bandaid, not a fix.
