Anyone take a magnesium supplement? Psych recommended it as a natural supplement to go with my prescription to help with mild depression/anxiety and to help with sleeping. I'm cynical about these natural cures but willing to try if it may help.

You're cynical about a magnesium pill, but take an antidepressant?

I hate being on it fwiw.

I'm not cynical in that it's going to do me harm or anything, just in that it will have any effect.

I started taking them because it was 10 bucks at Costco for a big bottle of it and zinc. I've slept a little better but my dreams are all of a sudden much more vivid.. And weird. Don't know what's up with that.

Only been doing it for a week and a half so I can't really say one way or another just yet.

Did you start taking it for sleep or a certain reason or just cause it was cheap?

Heard it helped with sleep. I wasn't sleeping very well and I knew it was important for recovery and I said what the hell I'll give it a shot.

I take 400mg of mag/day. I think it has helped keep me from getting pissed-off so easily but it may be a placebo effect. Either way it helps.

Don’t be. The human body is evolved to respond to vitamins, minerals and elements. Be cynical about unnatural cures that come with a price (side effects). There’s a better than fair chance you could clear up your sleep/depression issues with diet and exercise and drop the meds altogether.

I try to get it from food sources, but if i'm doing a particularly long or strenuous workout, event or other activity, i'll take a pill.

I'm obviously not qualified to give advice on depression (i'm not sure anyone really is), but check out the latest on MDMA treatment (no, not going to raves on the molly--rather, participating in professionally controlled short-term use) and psilocybin. Tim Ferriss is all over it: LINK

quote:

At this point, it's unclear whether Ferriss and his fellow donors will raise enough money to fund the Johns Hopkins pilot study on psilocybin. Even if they do generate enough funds, it remains to be seen whether the researchers will find that psilocybin has any substantial antidepressant and anxiolytic effects, as other research has suggested. Yet scientists who study this area are undeniably excited about psilocybin's potential. As Griffths (one of the Johns Hopkins researchers running the pilot study) told The New Yorker: "I don't want to use the word 'mind-blowing,' but, as a scientific phenomenon, if you can create conditions in which 70% of people will say they have had one of the five most meaningful experiences of their lives? To a scientist, that's just incredible."

and
CNBC Article on MDMA
quote:

"MDMA has a blockbuster aspect in many, many areas," said Dr. Wolfson in a telephone interview. "It could be used for PTSD, depression, couples' work, relationship work and probably OCD." The evidence, he claims, is in the studies now being published. Though results of Ingenito's study are still being analyzed, preliminary data suggests the MDMA sessions dramatically alleviated depression in the subjects. That follows an earlier study that tested MDMA as a treatment for PTSD in which 80 percent of subjects no longer suffered from the condition after just two sessions.
