My son is 12 years old and in 6th grade. He just had his first track meet and ran the 1600m. He's got a lot if work to do. What is a good time for that age group?
I've been running races for years but didn't start until I was almost 30. I have no idea what a good middle school time is.
TIA

A good time for that age group would be mid 5s. That’ll score points at most middle school meets.

You’re about to learn that kids are fast as frick if they develop a little endurance and have an ounce of talent.

Presidential Physical Fitness Test - Frewsburg Central School)]LINK[/link]

Gonna want to be minimum of top 80% for his age group on presidential fitness test. But to win, he will have to destroy those times.

Thanks. He ran just under 6:30 in his first real race. Has a lot to learn about pacing and how to actually race instead of just run, but he's got a lot left in the tank for sure.

But you are right, it's amazing how fast some of these little kids are at such a young age!

Kids don’t know it’s suppose to hurt a lot when running a fast mile hahaha.

When I ran the mile in middle school as an 8th grader i came in like 11th with a 6:30 mile. My buddy who also ran the mile went to state/regionals with a 5:24 mile.

Did he just start running? I would make sure he is having fun, don't push him. And have him work on sprint speed rather than long distance runs which can be really boring for a kid. With that said, probably 5:15 - 5:30. I ran 4:55 in the 7th grade about 40 years ago and kids are faster now.

Just don't push your kid too hard. At 12 I was struggling to run a 8 minute mile. At 18 I was banging out 6 minute miles and I did not even run cross country. Just played baseball. Good luck

I was running a 7:03 mile at the tail end of 4th grade and I hated long distance running. I much preferred the sprint distances.

In Cross Country, for 6th grade boys the winner is usually 5:40ish. Went the last 3 years to meets with my daughter and typically you have 1 kid way ahead of everyone else and the times are Mid/high 5's for the winner to the clock being turned off at 10 minutes and 20+ kids straggling in much later.
