I am trying to start the keto diet but have a question about certain salads. I am trying to track my carbs as closely as possible so after I ate a chicken shawarma salad today from Albasha, I searched how many carbs were in it. I was surprised to see it was over 40g of carbs. I am guessing they are counting the carbs from the pita bread they give with it. Can anyone confirm?

Any bread is going to put you over your carb for the day.

Also, were there any chick peas in the salad? Beans are a no-no on keto.

How about dressing? Anything other than just oil and/or vinegar is going to probably have carbs.

Most of those places use olive oil, vinegar, and lemon juice. That lemon juice is going to have carbs, and they tend to cover their salads in dressing.

Lemon juice wont cause that many carbs. The Albasha dressing is olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, salt/pepper mixed around at a high velocity until the garlic breaks down. Or, at least, that's what they told me when I asked about it. Should be pretty low-carb friendly.

OP, the answer is: Albasha is not a national chain and any entries you find on MFP or other apps is a guess from someone else - 40g carb is probably to include the pita.

Only thing I ate was the lettuce, the chicken, and whatever dressing Albasha puts on their salad. No pita bread or any beans. I have a good feeling they were including the pita bread in the estimate I had found. There is no way those three things I ate would but me over 40g of carbs.

Yep. It sounds like it was the pita.

Dont. Its not sustainable. If you are just trying to loose weight, meal prep and calorie count. Keto is dangerous if not done to perfection which the average person will not do.

Holy shite this is a dumb take. Please provide some source information that keto is “dangerous.”

Not to mention, it is very sustainable. I’ve done it myself for months at a time and my own dad, who usually sucks at dieting, did it for the entirety of 2019.

Just curious, how did it turn out for y’all? Did y’all exercise while on it also?

It was just the pita. Don't stress about it.

My dad is the lightest he’s been since high school from about 225 down to 185-190. We use it for different reasons. He does it for the weight loss, but I do it for body recomp to lean out.

In the couple of months I did it from mid March to mid May, I only lost about 8-9lbs from 173 to 165ish, but I was in damn good shape. I’m planning on doing it again beginning in mid February.

I tried it for a few weeks at the beginning of the fall. It negatively affected my strength and my aerobic fitness. I expected that to b the case for the first week or so, but my HR was still 10-20 BPM above normal and my lifts were still reduced by 25% or so after 3 weeks. I didn't need to lose weight. I was trying it to become more fat adapted for distance running. It wasn't worth it for me. I think I will still do the intermittent fasting periodically though. That seemed to be beneficial.

I did not exercise. I dropped from 275 to 215 in about 6 months and felt probably as good as I have ever felt. This was from July last year through Jan1.

I see someone has been reading Vice and US News for their nutrition "science."

In other words, this is utter nonsense.

I'm always surprised at the amount of sugar in most salad dressings too, but that would be odd for Albasha. Buy a piece of pita should have a lot less than 40g (esp post fiber).

I carb cycle for more serious activities (like running a marathon or a whole day of hard skiing). But for most things I can exercise in deep nutritional ketosis/fasted.

The key to using your bodies endogenous ketones as primary fuel is fat adaptation. Electrolytes. Electrolytes. Electrolytes.

I did keto while strength training. Didn't cause me any issues tho if training on a deficit I'd stick to the strength rep range or moderate on accessories. Also, take creatine.

I started keto two weeks ago, it's been great for reducing hunger/eating less, but how long does this keto flu last? Been taking magnesium supplements, and adding Himalayan salt to food and water.

You should be able to beat the keto flu pretty quickly. I added avocado to my diet along with the lite salt... Stay hydrated too.
