so i am getting to the stage where i am going to be installing the flooring at the garage gym at the house i am building. My last house i did have 2 layers of osb with 3/4 stall mats on top. I also had lifting platforms in the rack and outside.

I am trying to decide if i want a lifting platform this time or not. Meaning do i want to lay out the wood or not.

for reference I will be taking my old stall mats and laying them as the base layer and then another layer of stall mats on top of that. I will not be putting wood under the mats this time. Yes this provides protection but it also allowed moisture to get in there and even found a spot where it look like termites got it, so for sure not gonna do that.

just got to decide if doing the lifting playform this time. Does anyone have any opinion on this?

pros- stable surface for squats and dealifts that will not give.

cons- more slippery than the stall mats. also bench tends to move easily etc.

for reference here is my old garage gym, if i did put in a lifting platform I would either do in the rack, plus out front or a seperate one in the center of room. New garage is 17'6" x 21'6"; cage and hurricane will go on back wall again.

bro that gym is poo. the awesome view fricks up concentration and I dont see any chalk dust on the ground

you call that a gym

honestly I cant add later unless i want to add like a deadlifting platform on top similar to the rogue deadlift platform, which is certainly an option. I just cant see liking a raised area, but maybe i would like that better. I dunno, thats why i want opinions.

Guess ill have to post on reddit too.

After having horse stall mats over the last year and a half I found that's all i need to get absolutely jacked. I mean, an absolute tank. Shredded. A unit.

Sounds like you already have your mind made up. Get some rolled rubber flooring and a lifting pad on top.

I would install a platform. I find them much easier to adjust your feet on. I’ve never had a problem slipping.

10-4.

Was gonna do rolled rubber on top of the stall mats but it's the same price as stall mats and I would rather 1.5" over just adding 1/4" rolls on top of the mats

I’ve never felt more comfortable with dead’s than with a platform.

I built one in my garage and don’t think I could go back to not having one.

I’d move the wood outside of the rack and bench inside the rack on rubber and squat and deadlift outside the rack on wood. If you do any kind of Olympic lifting the wood is nice.

Squat outside the rack??

Blasphemy. Wtf hellnto the no. Whole point of a rack is to catch you if you fail or pass out etc.

I figured you had some safety spotter arms to catch you outside the rack. Sorry about that. I never squat in a rack.

All I've ever lifted on is 3/4" stall mats, so I'm not sure how big of a difference a wood platform really makes. The stall mats are plenty for me. I do use bumpers though, so I know that also makes a difference.

I made a platform for my old home gym. I spent way too much time painting a nice design on it so I would avoid dropping weight on it and messing up what I painted. Also the wood part on mine was 4’ wide so any bars that aren’t rackable like curls bars or hex bars would land on the wood. I did mix some nonskid additive to the clear coat for the wood. That helps with the slipping if you do make one.

When we moved I didn’t have time to make one so I just doubled up the horse stall mats. Now that I’ve gotten used to having a larger lifting area, I don’t think I could go back. There’s no set spot I have to lift. So if I need to move over a foot or 2 for my wife or kids to do something, then I can easily do that. Only reason I would want a platform would be to add band pegs for deadlifts.
