I got a gym membership bc I wanted to make changes in my health. I'm not fat. 6'2" 182 lb, but I never work out. I feel it will catch up with me as my cholesterol was already on the very highest of the acceptable range, like 1 pt from out of range.

Well, I got on the treadmill and ran like 1.05 miles and made it key to not go below 6 mph. I stayed between 6 to 8 mph the 1 mile. After this, I felt like passing out. Man I am out of shape.

I imagine it will get easier over time, but jeez. That was a lot harder than I thought it'd be.

You can greatly improve cardio through run/walk.

It's a misnomer that every workout needs to be "Rocky".

Competitive distance runners might have 3 hard runs a week. With rest being at a conversation pace.

Keep at it!

After a long break it’ll take a couple of weeks running 2-3 times a week and your pace/conditioning will really make a step change forward. Take your time and don’t get injured.

Get on an exercise bike and watch a movie.

Beats running for me. My knees are also appreciative.

*as long as resistance is turned up.

When running long distances, “time on feet” is more important than speed.

My mile PR is 4:56 but it took a while to get there.

Glad your back in the gym, stick with it kid

I signed up for a 6k run that happened last week. Didn't train for it other than my normal workouts which include 30 minutes of cardio on the treadmill. I was pretty happy with how easy the 6k run was for me. Made me feel good about my fitness. Good luck with the runs and hope you stick to it.

When is the last time you ruan a sub 5 mile? I’d bet a LARGE chunk of change that 98.9% of the TD population couldn’t do that.

I went out and bought last year's model (read, "new but half the price and still pretty snazzy so good enough for me") of a gym quality treadmill. One of the best investments I ever made, I use it every day - I think I'm addicted to staged walking now.

I like running, especially with the dog out on the grass or a path, but I'm old and it makes me sore afterwards.

A rare correct usage of every day v. everyday on TD. You must be a professor or something.

This.

80% of your mileage needs to be ‘easy’.

What kind did you buy? I'm torn between a treadmill and bike. I walked over 100 miles on the trace in April, but weather, heat, and work are making me not consistent.

For beginners I'd probably go further and recommend nearly all "EZ" for first few months. Toss in some short 50-100m sprints.

Initially, ez running and hard walking will promote physiological changes; increased capillaries in muscles, larger mitochondria etc.

After get used to "running" start some hard workouts.

Jeff Galloway's and Hanson's running have great beginner programs online.

Good on you for recognizing that you need to change and working towards it.

That mile will get easier crazy quick. Keep at it and in a few weeks it'll probably be your warm up.

congrats......now you realize the OT is full of shite. All the skinny fat guys and all the obese douches think they can all go run a 8 min mile like they did 10-15 years ago no problem.

this is step 1. start eating better, start lifting and get your but in shape.

A sub 5 minute mile? I bet 99% of TD couldn’t pull that off.

High school was the last time, but I ran track and cross country. By college, forget it, was eating pizza and drinking Dr Pepper all the time, and that ended that…
