Are there any Strongman fans here? Eddie Hall was the first to pull 500 KG (1,100 lbs) back in 2016. On May 2 Thor will attempt to break that record with a 501 KG (1,102.2 lbs) lift.
The lift was originally supposed to happen at the World's Ultimate Strongman competition in Bahrain on April 11, but like everything else, it was cancelled.
Thor's attempt will be held in his home country of Iceland with calibrated plates, approved bar, and a judge, so it would be a legitimate world record. He will wear a deadlift suit and use figure 8 straps. Thor seems to be the strongest he has ever been, and stands a great chance of breaking the record. The promoters were offering $100,000 to anyone who could break the record at the World's Ultimate Strongman competiton. I haven't seen for sure if that offer is still valid, but I suspect it is.
There will be a free livestream of the attempt at the link below:

I would link a pic of Thor's announcement on Instagram, but I don't know how to post pics.

Thanks for sharing! It will be cool to see. The last time he tried to break it, he almost got it.

I don't think he would have gotten it that day, even without the foot slip. That lift just looked slower than it needed to be.
If everything hadn't gone to shite with corona, I expected Thor to run the table (barring injury) on every comp he entered this year. He just looks so much stronger than everyone else, and is way too consistent to "lose" a comp on any one event like some other competitors can.

Huge strongman, power lifting, grip, and bodybuilding fan here.

Thor will get 501. Really wanted Julius Maddox to hit the 800 raw bench, but I have no idea where he is now with his training with the virus in play. Nonetheless two incredible feats we could see in 2020.

I don't think he would have that day, but he was close. He got stuck about an inch below the knee.

With straps, his grip won't run out and I don't think I've seen him miss above the knee with straps. He needs to squeeze about an extra 2 inches and I think he can.

He isn't a slow lifter like Shaw, but the minute I meet a guy who's explosive with 1100+, the world will end. I think one of the reasons he generally doesn't miss above the knee is he doesn't compromise position off the floor to move the bar.

I would have said 800 raw bench is impossible, but Maddox is improving exponentially right now. His 770 was smoother than his 740.

Huge Strongman and Thor fan! I think he was primed to get 501, wondering if he has been able to keep his training up to still be on pace to do it in May? Looks like he was training out of his garage instead of his gym. I would think that since Thor's Power House is his, he could still train there and just not make it open to the public?

I don't know how it is in Iceland, but the guys who own or co-own gyms haven't been able to use them due to them being open to the public. All gyms were shut down, and since those were public gyms, they can't even be opened for private training, evidently. Martins Licis is that way. He's part owner of The Training Hall with Odd, and he's training in a garage, sorta.
It is strange to think, but everything getting cancelled may be the best thing for Martins. He was beat to shite, and I think all the travel post WSM took a toll on him, more than he will ever admit. It was something he had to do, though. The year after winning WSM pays big for those guys.
He (Martins) finally has the time to recover properly and maybe get some rehab done.

Yeah, I think he will get it too. I don't think it will look easy, though and the chance he doesn't is definitely higher now than it was before corona took over. There's no way his training doesn't take a hit, at least to some extent.

I'd peg it 50/50. I think he has the strength, but it's at his limit and so many things can go wrong at that level.

Slightly being out of position, small muscle tweak, being a little beaten up...

I think there was another reason he didn't attempt the Rogue Record Breakers lift at the Arnold's last month, and that is because he had already signed an agreement to do it in Bahrain. Rogue was offering $101K to whoever lifted it, Thor outclassed everyone in the deadlift (despite the Wheel of Pain legitimately burning everyone the day before), and he looked to be in good shape. I understand he was focused on winning his third Arnold's in a row, but he could have attempted it. However, I believe he either had doubts (rightfully so considering it was day 2) or he has a contract with WUS.

This lift, maybe not as much as Eddie's, is about the promotion. So many people take Eddie's word of the training, the buildup, the "nearly dying", etc. at face value. Eddie approached that lift like a fight promotion. He knew what it would mean to him and his family financially, and he milked it. He has built his current career off of it and the subsequent WSM title. Thor's lift has some of that feel to it, and it should have that feel to it. It is great for advancing Strongman and continuing to make it a profitable endeavor for all involved.

Even if he sets the record I personally think Eddie Hall's lift will always be WAY more impressive. Dude broke the previous record by 75lbs.!!!! That's insane.

Why was his forehead bleeding ?

Yeah, Eddie has that claim. He didn't want to keep the "1 kg at a time" pattern going. He wanted to smash the record and do something no one thought possible. He did, and he will always have that claim.

His handler at competitions tends to get a little rough when he his hyping Thor up right before a lift/event. I think he scratched Thor's forehead and the pressure from the lift forced the small scrape to pour blood.
Mikhail Shivlyakov (sp?) just lets his nose do the bleeding. I remember one deadlift where he made a huge mess and just grinned and shrugged. He made the lift, though.

Do you know if Makarov's lifting with Thor?

He got the closest to 501 KG of anyone in the first clip in this compilation:

501

The time he tried it in a meet, he stalled basically at the same point Thor did.

I expect it to be just Thor, with the travel restrictions in place. I think Thor said it will be only around 20 friends, family, and crew there.
Makarov is going to have to attempt it at a sanctioned event with calibrated plates, preferably outside of Russia. Unfortunately, he's being burned by a Russian past that still has many folks skeptical.

On that note, I've been impressed with Makarov's strongman progression. What training videos he has released, particularly the log, have been legit.

Do you follow Strongman News on YouTube? If not, it is a good place to see what everyone is doing currently.

He did get 501 KG to his knee in a sanctioned event.

It's the 2nd lift

It was not as good as his gym lift, but close enough that it might have been a bad day, and at least enough I figure he's in striking distance.

Yeah, I saw the lift. He needs to enter the Deadlift World Championships or another bigger competition. It will remove all doubt and get him on the same stage as the bigger names in the world. There was an outside chance he was going to get an invite to the Log Press Championship, but I don't know what became of it. There had even been some talk of a WSM invite.
Until now, he's shown little interest in Strongman competition. Hopefully, his continued training will lead him to pursue it.
