I pulled out my first 100 mile attempt Saturday at 70 miles in. I went heavy on salts early bc of the heat and when I moved to straight water instead hyponametria set in. Pissed about 40 times over the next 16 miles.
At least I have a solid goal for next year now!lol

Canefield? How big was the field (of racers)?

Bummer dude; but as Salmom mentioned Saturday was not ideal at all.

Use your lessons learned to make you stronger. You are not far off, so don't get discouraged. Your base is still there.

Yeah, Children of the Cane. It got so hot by 9:30-10:00 that my HR was like 155-158 the entire 2nd 16.66 mile loop. To adjust to the heat and humidity I went heavy on the salts. By the time I got to 50 miles I actually felt fine, but salt was caking my body to the point of looking like I just came in out of a snow storm. So I switched to straight water for the 4th lap and I guess at that point I guess my kidneys started flushing sodium and I couldn’t stop. By mile 69 I was jackhammering bc I was so cold and the temp was only 69!

20 people started and I think around 10 finished.

First of all, congratulations on doing what you did.

I ran my first 50k last weekend at Screaming Monkey and by the time I was done, the thought of doing that twice made me want to ball up and cry.

It got hot as hell, between 75-80. With long periods of no wind and some humidity added, it was tough after 12pm. Saw quite a few people throwing up that afternoon and one withdrawal that night due to hypothermia or something similar to what you had.

26 people attempted the 100 miler, 6 finished.

With that being said, I am committed to the 100K next November.

Congrats, Polar Pop! Would’ve definitely made more sense to ease myself in!lol
What threw me for a loop was the 2nd 16.66 mile lap. It was from roughly 9am-12:15. I knew it’d be hot for the 3rd one, but I underestimated the humidity of that 2nd lap just because the temp stayed sub 80 degrees.

70 miles is a helluva accomplishment.

50k is as far as i've ever run, but i hear nutrition will make or break you in the longer ultras. gotta have some trial and error with that.

For sure! Plan on doing the LoVIT 100K in late February. It’s a trail that runs the southern border of Lake Ouachita in Arkansas. It’s about 12,000ft of climbing...

Wtf Andy, David Goggins would have removed his own kidneys and finished the race. C'mon man. Honestly though, 70 miles is about 69 miles more than most of us can run.

So I’m a big muscular dude, 5’8” 195. And I thought I was just gonna have to lose a crap ton of weight or get out of this scene. But I’ve been chatting all day with the dude who won it and beat the course record by 20 minutes. Hes 195lbs! Just gotta approach it from a different strategic angle I guess!

I really want to run a 5k under 25 min. I have never been a runner.

Plus right now my strength and aesthetics are more important so I don't train the running as often as I should.

At 35 he still runs a sub 50sec 400 and a sub 2min 800. So he mixes a lot of speed workouts with a lot of really long, slow endurance runs. Keeps his HR under 130 on all of his endurance runs. And he almost races as much as he trains. He doesn’t do stupid crazy amounts of running like 100+miles per week. He is a music junkie and it fuels him his entire run. The main reason he stays large is bc he’s a bow hunter and values it more than running, so he stays large up top so he can pull his bow back easily. He says he spends more time hunting than he does running. He hunts or grows(gardens) almost 100% of the food he eats and never does any processed foods. He’s also really into breathing and practices it a lot of sports science purposes. He inhales and exhales through his nose, as exhaling through his nose saves so much hydration.

Polar,
I did SM 50k as well. Hard to build momentum on that course. We got Loup garou 40 miler next.

That second lap busted my arse towards the end. Everything was clicking over so fast, then at mile 24 its like time froze. Good luck on Loup Garou, Im set for LA Marathon in Jan then I will start laying long framework for SM 100k.

That some interesting info. There was a guy on Joe rogans podcast talking about how important breathing through the nose is when running.

Btw, is it really considered DNF-ing at mile 70 of an ultra?
