I feel compelled to reply, as I’ve walked a mile in those shoes. I was diagnosed bipolar 2 in my 20s. I’ve taken just about every medication out there (to be fair, I finally found the right mixture of mood stabilizer and anti depressant, and still take them currently).

The posters above are spot on. I’ve found that I’m happy giving my time and talents to others. I’m a good cook, so I started a free breakfast ministry at my church, and you would not believe the joy it brings me. Your purpose in life doesn’t have to be fit for a movie. I’ve found that lower income people relying on me to help them get from week to week is a worthy purpose. Plus, I’ve made some good friends I never would’ve made prior to this.

TLDR-sometimes looking outside of your 10 foot cone holds your answers.

Op, I struggle with depression too. I’m at my happiest when I’m being of value to others.

I need to work on this myself.

I just Go to work , come home, watch a little tv and go get in bed and read until I fall asleep. ( cut way back on drinking, and get plenty of sleep… I need to exercise after work but I’m usually so sleepy I can find no motivation for that part)

I live a very isolated life, with few friends and outside of my wonderful parents, not sure anyone would miss me.

Not sure depression meds would do much for me as it’s this feeling of loneliness that haunts me.

Yeah, I used to play soccer in a couple of leagues (played football in college), but have become so isolated post Covid. And now I work from home as well when I’m not deployed to a disaster or disease.

If you live in SoCal there are half a million miles of desolate trails and hikes within an hour. Get a cheap tent and sleeping bag and pack a backpack for a trip. Get as far away from people for a few days in the wild and find yourself. Bring your cellphone but pack it in the bottom of your pack and don't touch it. It's just there for emergencies.

Isolation feeds depression. You need to get out of the house.

Also, have you looked into alternative treatments like psilocybin or Ketamine? Ketamine got me out of some really dark times and the worst depression of my life after isolation from covid took my depression from 3 to 10. While I was not suicidal, it has been shown to reverse suicidal tendencies and ideations in majority of patients. They have clinics all over the place now.

I’ve done mushrooms and 4 ayahuasca ceremonies. I’ve tried ketamine too, but not paired with counseling. I’m looking into EMDR therapy.

My abuse happened in the church, so it’s been a struggle the times I’ve forced myself to go to mass. Thanks for the advice.

I was abused as a kid countless times. At 48 I’m just finally coming to terms with it and the impact it’s had on my life. Trying to figure out who the real me is and what is “scar tissue”. I wish I had good advice to deal with this but I’m not very far along in the process and I’ve only told one actual person it even happened. Lots of guilt and shame though.

How long did you try each one and did you ever get to therapeutic dosages?

This might be a long shot but we have a granddaughter that suffers from depression, anti depressants didn’t work.Drs. just kept increasing her doses and/ or changing her meds.
Turns out she has a genetic condition called l-methylfolate deficiency.Basically her body was unable to convert folic acid into l-methyl folate. She was put on a medication called Deplin. In just a couple of weeks she had major improvement in her symptoms and her meds have been tapered way down.

A NP figured out her problem and ordered the genetic test to verify it.Pissed off our son,he has been taking her to Drs.,psychiatrists and psychologists for years and all they ever did was jack around with her meds with no improvement. Then a NP figured it out.

Another thing that might help is cleaning up your diet.Eat foods high in tryptophan-
eggs, cheese, turkey, nuts, salmon, tofu, pineapple.Tryptophan is a precursor of serotonin.Serotonin is a neurotransmitter and a deficiency is associated with depression and anxiety.

Good luck.

Lexapro was only a couple weeks because of constant headaches and stomach issues, but Prozac was 40 mg for at least 6 months. Can’t remember how long tbh

Since a lot of your issues are likely related to the trauma of abuse, I would highly recommend looking into a ketamine therapy session. Since you've done ayahuasca, I'm sure you're familiar with the research, but lots and lots of promising data out there on use of ketamine in a clinical setting to combat treatment-resistant depression, specially that stemming from trauma and PTSD related.

All the other lifestyle recommendations and such are really good, but I also know that it's pretty damned hard to make a change and be proactive (just go work out, dude.. it like therapy, bruh!) when you're in the depths of the darkness.

I also agree that social isolation is tough. Some kind of support group would likely be helpful (hell.. look into a men's abuse survivor group. It could give you community, therapy, and purpose all in one).

Also, I'm not a victim of abuse, so I have no idea how you process such things. But I love to read, and I often feel like reading about something helps me work through it (problems with my self, work, etc..). I recently saw someone post about this book, and your situation just reminded me of it:

Evidently it's about how often males are abused and how they just sort of get overlooked in the societal dialog about sexual abuse, which can make it really tough (along with all the baggage of being a "masculine" guy) for them to work through.

Im curious what a SNRI or Wellbutrin would do since its not a SSRI, and adding Buspirone instead of a Benzo for the anxiety.

Might also be good to cross it with a mood stabilizer like Lithium

You need to find a high quality, high dose outfit - not just one of the chop shops. I can help if you'd like.

In what setting? I'm somewhat surprised you got no relief from these.

Have you tried 5meo?
