My Pop had some shortness of breath. I took him to the emergency room. In short, a doc asked him a few questions and they did they did an EKG. He was in there 30 minutes max (not that it matters). The good news is that he is good to go. My take, he got a new mask which wasn’t as “breathable” and between that and his prior health issues, his breathing was slightly more restrained which eventually led to the ER visit.

My concern is financial as he is a retired teacher but not Medicaid/ Medicare aged.

As such, I try to assist them. Any thoughts on what his visit might cost?

Not sure but EDs are very expensive trips, typically.

A lot of insurances have a separate ED deductible you meet before they start paying. So, without insurance (which is what this sounds like) I’d expect it to be pretty hefty...

I expect it to be hefty. The question is how hefty? 1500? 3000? 5000?

I know he is limited in his ability to come up with cash. I am just trying to get a ballpark estimate.

A quick Google search shows a range of $500-$3000. It depends on location and hospital system.

Thanks Deaf.

Shame on me for being lazy.

I suppose I was looking for someone with some experience in the billing arena (or from personal experience as a patient). As for the location being a factor, I understand that as well. He went to St. Tammany Parish Hospital.

He did not get the option to carry his insurance into retirement?

I am pretty sure that he did (Blue Cross/Blue shield). I don’t know what (if any) is covered for him. I am just trying to get some insight into what he may have to come up with as though he doesn’t have insurance (prepare for the worst so I can best assist him).

If he’s placed in a telemetry room you’re looking at over $7,000 per day

People will downvote but you’re right I’m hugely conservative but our society does have legitimate issues that gullible people will go to the extreme to attempt to fix.

There’s no reason for drugs and healthcare to be as expensive as they are right now. Getting hooked up to a machine and basically receiving a service given by a $12/hr employee should not be $3,000

Medicaid has nothing to do with age. It’s strictly income. Since he’s retired, maybe he qualifies. Check your state’s Medicaid income eligibility. They’d pay 100%.

When I went to the ER for heart issues they did an EKG and a CT scan, along with blood work. My ER bill is around $1,500, bill for lab work I think was $180, bill for ER doctor, $340. And there may have been another small random bill in there. I'll be paying on that shite awhile. Once ObamaCare kicked in my deductible went from $500 to $4,000.

Hope this helps some. A pediatric EKG is $2,305 at CHNOLA.

You’ll never hear me say socialized medicine is a good thing, but there’s no reason it should cost as much as it does.

Goto your primary care and see a cardiologist then, people treat the ER as their primary care office. shite is expensive there if you want to go when you aren’t having a true emergency
