1 week update:

Down 6lbs according to scale, I’ll caution that last week was first time weighing since the holidays, New years and my kids had snow days so basically 3 weeks of wheels off anything goes in terms of diet…

I only weighed last Monday & this am…but I’ll take it

Wins: mainly stuck to diet. Went out to eat 3 times and avoided gouging myself with chips and salsa, queso, etc. as 2 times was Tex Mex (I’m in TX). Avoided alcohol for most part. Walked into my pantry and left empty handed probably 100 times, lol. Amazing the habit of grabbing something almost out of boredom that had been established…

I wasn’t perfect as I did have chick fil a nuggets on Saturday as had 6 different kiddo events all day and was not home from 8am - 8pm… also couple “ranch waters” at dinner that night.

On to week 2, cheers

1.5 week update

Down another 4.5lbs since Monday. This week has been hard so wanted to see the progress, not wait for Monday. Fridays always my favorite weigh in day when I'm cutting as usually I've been pretty good on diet / exercise through week. Will weigh in Mondays & Fridays for rest of this experiment...

Wins: I could eat bacon & eggs every am for eternity I believe.
This is keeping me away from alcohol & snacks big time so breaking those habits and keeping new ones hopefully will be key moving forward.

Loss: Steak is getting somewhat boring or at least not looking forward to it as much as week 1. There are worst things to complain about so not to big of a loss.
Cravings, still getting sweet tooth cravings occasionally, had a couple greek yogurt cups to hit spot...

committed to this until my birthday middle of next month... Will evaluate after for plan going forward but I'm going to be adding more options Chicken, Shrimp, Fish etc. Maybe more in line with Keto than pure carnivore. But so far this is working for immediate goal of dropping lbs.

Anyway thanks for reading my diary - cheers fellas

the carb manager app

I’ve been using this app for over five years. I used the free version until I bought the paid version this year. The paid version is a little bit better, but I operated just as well with the free version. I really like it. I think it’s really good If you’re serious about tracking your nutrition. The more you use it the easier it gets.

I’ve been doing strict keto 5-20-70 for quite a while now while performing physical therapy in the form of muscle hypertrophy every day that I can for the last nine months. During this time, I have lost what appears to be about 20 pounds of fat and have put on about 25 pounds of muscle and lean body mass.

It has absolutely transformed my body composition to a striking extent.

While I am still in the weight gain mode I am not losing fat more quickly than I am gaining lean body mass so my weight has basically stayed the same. My appearance has absolutely changed. The more muscle mass increases it seems the quicker it grows.

I have arthritis in my knees and shoulders and the physical therapy of light weights high repetitions to failure or a couple of reps from failure has worked well for me. I no longer ache when I’m just sitting there however I still have some pain in my knees and shoulders, but it is entirely manageable. I’m going to keep going until I feel like I’ve put on enough muscle mass that maintaining it won’t be that big of a chore.

I will probably continue the high fat low carb diet for the rest of my life because it seems to really agree with me. I think as we age, we definitely need to manage our protein and that will be a primary focus moving forward.

I get blood panels every six months due to hypothyroidism and the only reading that is in the upper part of the range is LDL and because of my diet and low risk for heart attack It’s not an issue.

At some point, I’m going to switch over and focus on lowering my body fat percentage because I feel that would be more healthy in the long run.

On sort of a sidenote, I discovered Allulose and I make a killer pumpkin pie and cheesecake that are 100% sugar-free. Both of them are the best I have ever had sugar or no sugar.
I will have a 1/12 slice or two as a snack and it fits right in with my macros no problem.

To summarize the keto diet has really done well for me physically but mentally probably just as much. I had to do something to Divert my attention after my wife passed away in April and I believe this has helped tremendously.

I started the same day as you (1/13/25). Have you noticed yourself feeling more moody? I have occasional bursts of feeling good but it usually doesn’t last all day. I’m doing this for the supposed cognitive benefits.

Theres definitely a lot of variability in response...but early in in Carnivore my libido went way down. You can get some disruption in hormone profile but it eventually corrected itself for me, especially when I started eating more. If you are leaning down quickly this may be something you encounter

Not anymore than normal probably less actually. Been a doozy of a week as Wife has been sick so picking up a lot of the slack around the house & with all the kiddos activities. Attributed any mood shifts to being “hangry” or just spread thin.

A couple times I’ve been hungry but had to go to a basketball game across town and not been able to eat til late, funny when I’ve gotten home not even hungry, like I know I need to eat but any sense of hunger gone…

Overall I’d say my mental clarity & energy has improved, especially after lunch and afternoons when previously be dragging a bit

I’ve noticed similar feelings when I’ve gotten to lower bf % so you are probably right. The problem is I’m already stuffing my face right up until being nearly nauseated. It’s good and bad but I have almost zero hunger on this diet and I’m running out of meats that seem even slightly appetizing.

Yeah it absolutely could be a byproduct of dropping below your normal homeostasis of body fat

I feel ya there. Ive restarted carnivore several times after breaks. I always start off wanting variability, never fails. Eventually for me it always narrows down to where I just want fatty steak. I crave ribeyes now like crazy and the craving only starts fading if I take a break and add back in carbs. Just my experience but just a scroll through youtube shows that there are longtime carnivores that love different dishes. Some even make cheesecakes, etc that are zero carb and look great

That’s what’s getting me…I’m a foodie at heart and I love cooking. This has taken the fun out of that but I’ll try to approach this as a mission. My plan was to do this for 30 days, convert to keto for day 30-90, and then pace myself into a low carb (100 carbs or less most days).

Gonna go buy some ribeyes right now and see how that goes lol

There are some really tasty no carb dishes ive seen on youtube. If you really love cooking, you should try some of these. Steak and butter girl even made some carnivore pancakes that looked delicious. The no carb(or low carb if you want to add crushed nuts for a crust) cheesecake looks very good.

Get creative with this as well. I like to reverse sear smoke ribeyes. My family loves them. If you are a cook you obviously know all the different ways to cook ribeyes so that can add some variability.

For those that of you who’ve done this, how did you start?
Did you just dive right in or did you transition in with removing certain items first or maybe doing keto?

I’ve eyeballed this for some time now but the stories of diarrhea give me pause Thinking maybe eliminating certain items or going in to keto for a bit first might make it easier

I’ve done it for relatively short amounts of times on numerous occasions. I’ve never had this problem, but my diet is protein focused and I don’t eat like trash all the time

You aren’t getting enough fats. It’s imperative since you aren’t getting carbs for energy you must get in enough fats. This is going to be different for everyone to what level of fats you need based on your intensity and activity level etc.

I’m trying. Anytime I eat fattier cuts of meat my stomach does not handle it well. I get nauseousness, brain fog, and diarrhea. Hopefully things get better as my body learns to break down fat more efficiently

To the guy asking how to jump into this….If I could go back I’d have done a keto diet for about 3 weeks. My guess is that would have helped the transition when I went full carnivore

how much ground meat are you eating? Finding that is working for me, bowl of either pork sausage or hamburger meat with couple fried eggs on top to be one of my go to meals.

haven't had much of the stomach issues many talk about on this diet. Occasional but not all the time

I'm in same boat. Started with South Beach, moved towards Keto/Carnivore. Not really following any of them strictly, just no bread, booze, sugar, seed oils, etc. I do eat zero sugar cool whip at night every once in a while. But usually get my sweet fix from cottage cheese and no sugar added peaches. Down 40 lbs since Sept. and only 8 lbs from my weight when I finished basic training in 1989.
