So last week I finally signed up with a personal trainer. I'm enjoying it, but, between our schedules, my workouts are at 5am.

The workouts are pretty intense, so I def need to eat something beforehand to power through, but I don't want something heavy.

I've tried some steel cut oats, but I really feel like I'm sapped of energy about 3/4 of the way through the workout.

I do drink a pre-work out, too.

Any suggestions for a nutrient dense, easy breakfast option I could try that'll get me through the workout?

I struggle with this as well. Lately I've been trying rice with eggs and ground turkey but sometimes I feel like puking near the end of a high rep squat session (4x20). I think you want some carbs high on the glycemic scale though. I've tried oatmeal mixed with whey protein and water and it seemed to work okay. Mix it the night before and put it in the fridge so it has time to mix better. I also mix a powerade with EAAs to drink during the workout.

I just throw down a protein shake. Works for me.

Peanut butter toast. Not too heavy, not too light.

You really shouldn’t need this meal if you had a good dinner the night before. I’d also argue that most nutrient dense foods wouldn’t help unless you finished eating around 3am.

But, if you must:
-Crushed up Chex cereal in a chocolate protein shake. Protein and simple carbs
-Applesauce is my go to for quick energy

You sure it’s a food issue?

What time are you going to bed the night before your 5am workout? How much time between waking up and working out do you get? Are you hydrated enough after a night’s sleep to work out at 5am?

Oats should be plenty to get through a workout. I honestly never eat before exercise in the morning (starting around 530-545) and can run or lift heavy for an hour no problem.

A piece of fruit works well for this. My go-to is an apple before a workout if I'm hungry.

Its probably not lack of food.

You are just out of shape.

I never eat anything before my early AM workouts.

As others have previously stated, if you’ve had a good dinner the night before, you shouldn’t need much food for an early AM workout. It’s more likely that you’re not drinking enough water prior to exercise. I do almost every workout during a fast and never feel hungry or sluggish toward the end. Hydration is my main priority before exercise.

This ^. Working out fasted is great. I get up at 4 am and the last thing I want is something to eat. Eat a bowl of Casein pudding (thanks to this board for putting me on to that) before bed and you will not wake up hungry.

This could be a part of the issue. Been working on my water intake. Usually for this workout, I'm in bed by 10 and asleep by 1030...I probably need to move that up a bit.

Yes I will. He's pretty big into protein bars, I was hoping for something a bit less processed.

Make sure you are hydrated. If you need to eat, ive found that a PBJ works and is easier on the stomach.

The main reason I don't workout in the morning is because I have to eat before. And if I have to eat before, that means I have to shite before. So now I have to wake up 30 minutes earlier than if I don't have to eat and shite. 4:30am wake up time can go frick itself, I'll stick to my 90 minute lunch breaks for my workout.

I eat my dinner usually around 6pm, so by the time the morning workout rolls around, its been about 12 hours since my last meal. Whether yall think I'm out of shape or whatever yall think, I cannot lift weights for an hour on an 11 or 12 hour fast.

My wife makes me a batch of protein bites and that's breakfast on the drive to work after the gym.

You don’t really need to eat before you workout. The best athlete I’ve ever been around did HIIT everyday and only ate 1 meal a day, at night. Also no snacks, shakes, etc

If you aren’t eating before your workout, getting a good warm up is of utmost importance. If you are sweating when you start your workout, you should be good. But you might not have to go that far even. You just have to get your body to mobilize fats into your blood stream so you don’t get that omg out of blood sugar freak out.
