Any recommendations?

We have two sets of the Bowflex adjustable dumbbells at our office gym.

They work well enough, but not as well as individual dumbbells.

Sometimes the dials get stuck, requiring me to remove all the plates from the handle.

The heavier set that goes to 90lbs, the handles hurt my hands.

On my second set of bow flex. First set lasted 11 years through 4 moves and used them very often. The dials would get stuck and eventually didn’t work at all so I was stuck with it on 45 lbs or something. For the price, they’ve been solid, though. I bought the stand for my new set as getting older and bending down to pick up the weights from the floor seemed like a bad idea. Had the new ones for 2 years with no problems so far. I do put athletic tape around the handles though as they would get slick from sweat working out in the garage.

I’ve done all I can to only buy Made in the US gear for my home gym so I have the PowerBlocks (US edition). Got them off Craigslist. Was leaning towards the Nuobells but when I saw they were made in China went with PB

Not Famistar. Wish I knew what to recommend, but my parents got me a set for Christmas. The weights stick all of the time, and there’s no manual way to remove them. You have to shake them and wiggle them until they hopefully pop off.

I have the Core Fitness dumbbells and really like them. Pretty compact and 5-50 lbs in 5lbs increments. That said, I doubt they’d hold up to a 16 year old looking to get yolked. Get him a gym membership.

I've had the Nuobells for a year now, and use them 5 times a week. They get my vote.

What's the difference?

I love my nuobells, they're honestly over-engineered.

Are the Nuobells capable of adding weight down the road?

He's 16 so he wouldn't need the 80 pound version for a while and I found the 50 pound version on sale for $293.

no, if you are looking for upgradable, get the peppin, ironmasters or the powerblocks. or get handles from rogue and get olympic plates.

imo best bet is the following and the best for those starting a home gym

bench
octobell- 80lbs
magnetic micro weights for incriments between 5lbs
set of gymnastic rings
50 & 100lb strongman sandbag for carries

cheapest and best way to go. if you wanted to get the 50lbs now, go ahead, can upgrade and sell them later.

as far as difference between nuobell and octobell...price really, especially when you include shipping

I haven’t looked into it lately, but I started off with a sets of 1” spinlock dumbbell handles (16” long) and enough 10s, 5s, and 2.5s to make 60lb dbs (8 10s, 4 5s, 4 2.5s). Over time as I got stronger I added a second set of handles and more 10s. I now have enough stuff for up to 85lb and 35lb to be loaded and ready to go at the same time so the switching isn’t too bad. Also no worries about dropping them. There are a lot of used 1” metal weights on Facebook market too (wife asks a couple times a month if I need more/if a posting is a good deal)

I want some Nuobell or Octobell type dbs for convenience and cleaning up the gym area, and for not looking ghetto when I assemble 85lbers with like 3 different size/color weights, but it’s a luxury item (and I’m REALLY hoping eventually they become expandable to 100 lbs).

//edit I’ve used my brother’s 80lb Nuobells and they are really nice and have a great feel when lifting. I would never slam them on the ground after lifting tho, and I suspect there comes a time in every single 16 year old’s life where they watch Ronnie Coleman repping 200lb dbs and throwing them and decide to recreate it with your $$$ dumbbells

but i mean how often do people really need more than 80lbs?

i have the powerblocks that go to 125, i hardly ever change the handles out to go above 90. At that point i would rather raise the number of reps or slow things down to make the reps harder. If you need to go heavier than that really just get barbell.

Not the Nuobell, but I'm not sure about the Octobell.

But if he's going to lift regularly, and you like ease of use, it's very hard to beat the Nuobells. I know it sounds lazy, but clicking to pick your weight is one of the easiest things to do. It's an awesomely engineered piece of gym equipment.

Another thing, Nuobells hold their value well if you don't destroy them too. So if you picked up those 50's, you could easily sell them and not take too big of a hit.

Because of shoulder issues, I don't even go past 50.
