I had some time to kill today so I wandered into a Latin supermercado nearby and perused the meat section. There were lots of very cheap & interesting cuts you won't find in the normie grocery store and it got me thinking about incorporating more variety into my diet.

Who here has experience with eating organs and weird parts of chickens, pigs, and cows? I'm equal parts repulsed and intrigued at most of the stuff I saw....

Here's a sampling of some foods I encountered and would consider putting in my feeding rotation because they seem like very good protein sources. Liver is kinda standard, but other stuff like feet, bull balls, pig tails, tripe, pig ears, and tongue are way off my radar.

Nutrition is per 8oz.

Beef kidney - 288 cal. / 49P, 9F
Beef heart - 254 cal. / 40P, 9F
Beef tongue - 643 cal. / 44P, 51F
Beef liver - 403 cal. / 61P, 12C, 11F
Pork tongue - 215 cal. / 41P, 4.5C, 7F
Chicken hearts - 240 cal. / 38P, 9F
Chicken liver - 317 cal. / 53P, 2C, 12F

Hearts don't taste very good. Never had tongue, but I hear it's good. Also, the head meat is supposed to be delicious, but I've never had it either.

heart can be really good or shite. Duck/geese hearts tend to be awesome and sweet. Never had beef. but the following are great for you especially if they come from grass fed

Beef kidney - 288 cal. / 49P, 9F
Beef heart - 254 cal. / 40P, 9F
Beef tongue - 643 cal. / 44P, 51F

beef liver is pretty good too but if i remember right, has less nutritents compare to the others.

Beef liver is extremely nutrient dense. I don’t know what it has on a relative basis to kidneys/hearts/brain but I think 9-12 oz provides your weekly RDA for vitamin A in the most bio available form (as compared to precursors in carrots and sweet potatoes).

It's pretty hard to beat liver from a nutritional standpoint, but I can't deal with the taste.

thanks for correcting me. I was being too lazy to look it up and was going simply off memory.

and yea I can't deal with the taste. Maybe i need to learn to cook it better though. I think chicken livers are disgusting.

I love beef liver. I may start making soon. As for the other stuff, I haven’t had it, but I’ll try anything. Except for tongues. Weird.

Beef heart is very good, very tender.

I’ve had beef tongue as well as cheek (no pun intended) in a Roman dish called “Boliti” and it was the worse thing I’ve ever tried. I’ll eat just about anything as well.

I wasn’t trying to correct you, just helping out with a little tidbit of information. I hate the taste as well. If anyone has a way to make it bearable, I’m all ears.
