At what point are rest times too long to stimulate growth?

Had a lazy day in the gym this morning. Did bench and deadlifts. Few sets of chins.

Rest times between bench warm ups were around 1-2 minutes. 4 minutes between working sets.

Got to deadlifts and did 5 minutes between warm ups and 1st set. 7 minutes until the next.

At what point am I wasting the work out?

Before I give my opinion, I want to preface by saying I'm a complete moron.

That being said, I don't think taking longer than usual breaks is a waste of a workout. In my completely uneducated opinion, as long as you are getting the reps in, its not a waste, unless you are trying to maintain a certain heart rate, in which case taking breaks that long may not allow you to do so.

I’m assuming by growth you mean hypertrophy and not strength. Your rest times in this workout are typical for strength training. What rep ranges are your working sets?

Not how it works. Just get close to failure and you are fine. Stop over thinking it. You aren't wasting a workout.

I just lol'd at the thought of someone thinking they basically did nothing for an hour because they waited X amount of time in between sets. You are at the gym so you're already better than most of the population. Unless you are a professional and counting macros and shite, all this stuff is moot.

According to available research, shorter rest periods are better for hypertrophy (muscle growth) while longer rest periods are better for strength gains. However, the difference experienced by the average lifter is probably negligible.
