At war with the Gut

53 year old guy here. Skinny as a rail for most of my life, the last ten years that has changes in a big way. I'm nearly 6'2, around 260. Most, not all, of that fat is in my belly. I literally look pregnant.
A1C is normal, blood pressure is controlled with a low dose of lisinopril, lipids are a mess and I have to take atorvastatin. Drink only maybe every couple of weeks, now totally quitting. Not done soft drinks since Lent started, occasionally will have lemonade. Have cut out post dinner snacking and have done so completely the last two weeks. Increasing protein, more vegetables.
Also, started gym, specifically lifting weights, 3-4 days per week. I know it's been a couple of weeks since getting more radical, but happen to get a glance of my side view in the mirror, and what the hell, can I look just "slightly" smaller?
Part of it is crappy genes, nearly every man on my dad's side had the gut going on, I'm trying to break the trend. Primary care has sent additional info to my insurance so they will approve Wegovy, in the meantime, has mentioned Contrave as a fallback to eliminate cravings.
Anybody around my age been through this and lost the weight?

Never had a belly until I hit 40. At 50 it got out of control (I got up to 225 at 6'1"). I have always drank beer and eaten pretty much what I wanted (though I did intermittent fasting most days).
High protein diet is my answer. It's transformed my body and eliminated the majority of my gut. I still drink some beers on a weekly basis, but seriously... I can't recommend moving to a high protein diet enough. I'm less hungry than I was when I was just managing with fasting, and I just keep dropping weight. I'm below 200, and I think I am shooting for 190.

If you are not tracking macros and eating within those macro goals, you are just hoping. There needs to be a protein emphasis.
Especially if you never worried about food intake the majority of your life. You don’t know what you don’t know about food. Tracking macros will teach you.

I had the same problem. Turns out, I had a 35lb cancerous tumor in my abdomen. Bloodwork was consistently fine. It wasn’t until someone decided to do an ultrasound and MRI of my abdomen to find out.

Only eat things with less than 11-12 calories per gram of protein, try to limit it to 10 calories per gram of protein is possible. Its not hard.
This pretty much ensures you are eating dense foods that will fill you up and cannot be high in carbs. I promise you it will fix bad eating due to cravings.
f you feel like you must go the glp1 route then try to get tirz instead of semag.

Macros completely changed my eating habits, for good. I never really knew how/what to eat until I started counting macros. It's amazing how much you'll understand what foods you can eat, how much, what things you can cheat on, etc. when you start tracking macros and paying attention to nutrition labels.
My body fat got to where I wanted when I started tracking everything I ate. I actually did a scan yesterday and I was at 9.3% BF, which I'm fine with. I've found when I start cutting too much more, I suffer a little on my workouts (CrossFit).
I religiously weighed or measured everything I ate or drink for about nine months when I started tracking my macros last year. Now that I've learned what I can eat and I know the protein/fat/carb content of things (nutrition labels!), I'm just mentally tracking it.
I used the Macrostax app when I first started and it helped a ton.

Cut carbs. No snacks. Quit alcohol completely. Get 10K steps in daily.

Not trying to be an arse, but the genetic factor is more where you carry the weight. You’re more than 60 pounds overweight, the good news is that part can be changed. Calling it “bad genetics” just gives you an excuse to have the gut.
As far as losing the weight - eat real food. Meat, fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables. Stay far away from processed foods. Two most important things to track are protein and fiber. If you can get 200g protein and 30-50g fiber from whole food sources I assure you the need to snack will go away. It will be tough at first but within one week you will feel more satiated and have more energy.

Also, cut all of this out. If you have to, diet sodas but I find even those can crank up my cravings so I only drink water. For carbonation I’ll drink topo Chico mineral water.
In addition to the weight lifting I’d add walks outdoor. Start off getting minimum 7k steps per day and gradually increase that to 10k.
Do that for one week and you’ll be amazed at how good you feel. Stack it for a few months and you’ll be a totally different person. Good luck

Fact
“My dad and uncle (both of whom were also 80lbs overweight) have high cholesterol, I can’t help it, it’s genetic”

Good post and I didn't take it the wrong way at all. Looking back, my intake has been atrocious. One or two cokes per day, sweet tea, lots of junky processed foods. Have really reduced the snacking and trying to watch portions at dinner. When I do snack, it's more fruit than anything. Yesterday i had an afternoon snack of a protein shake and a banana.
Not seeing the numbers go down, but I do feel more energy and I'm sleeping better at night.
Thanks again for your reply, it was good.

That’s a good start! A fiber cheat code is to throw some avocado and chia seeds into the protein shake. Both also high in omega 3s. Chia seeds have like 10g of fiber for 2 tbsp and if blended well you won’t notice they’re there. (You will have to use a blender to incorporate the chia seeds lol)
Also for snack fruits all berries are fantastic. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries all great fiber content and delicious.

What does tracking macros mean? How do I do it?
Posted on 4/17/25 at 1:41 pm to BluegrassCardinal
quote:i can tell you from experience because hbp runs in my family that BP meds and esp. the atorvastation for cholesterol can cause weight gain, heart burn and bloating. I was taking the statin and got off because of the side effects and cleaned up my diet. I eat only 4/5 ounces of lean chicken/turkey or seafood(grilled shrimp/grilled or baked fish) and anything green(veges, 3/4 cup per meal) that i can get my hands on with a serving of fruit. I use low carb protien bars for in-between meals. I eat one egg and 1 toasted wheat bread for breakfast.
lisinopril, lipids are a mess and I have to take atorvastatin
It sounds like you have the right idea.
Eliminate any processed foods.
Stop soda even diet coke.
No alcohol.
Get as many days in gym as you can and get at least 30/40 minutes of cardio.
Contrary to the meathead wannabes on here that will say stop being lazy, see a medical weight loss facility. Adding some medication can tremendously help along the way. Either by injection or pill. A bud of mine went to a weight loss clinic last year went from 248 to 180 in 5 months. He was taking a daily pill and following the above just eliminating bad stuff.
Many people will workout out 6 days a week and can't figure out why they dont lose. Its in the diet of that individual. You can even be eating good but slight sugars here and there on a daily basis that you don't think matters causes our body's to literally stall, slow metabolism, weight doesn't come off etc. Drink half your weight in ounces of water a day. That is hard to do. I settle for about 60/70 ounces of water instead of a 100. Sounds like your on your way though. The wegovy will help alot also.

quote:incorrect sir. You couldn't be more wrong. Look it up its facts. Eating sugary items daily adds up and throws the whole weight loss plan out the window until you stop the sugary stuff. It sorta flies under the radar when you eat sugary things. We all experience it. Once you actually write down what you eat, then you'll realize that's what is holding you back or not. Wieght loss is all in what you are eating unless you have some sort of medical problem. Unless your planning 3 hours of gym and exercise 6 days a week or run 7 miles a day, 5 days a week, most people need to bust sugar under the current plan they are following along with other things. Yeah once every couple of weeks wont hurt but "daily" will. Your comments are ignorant.

I eat sugar sticks many days, on purpose. I’ve lost weight since I’ve starting eating those
