My gf (no pics) slipped at a water park 2 weeks ago and fractured her left humerus. She had emergency surgery where they placed 12 Titanium screws in her shoulder. How was recovery and the length of it?

She’s in a ton of pain, obviously, and we wanted to get advice from someone that may have had the same or similar injury.

Yikes that looks bad.

I've never had anything that bad, but have had a range of breaks and tears and pins in breaks. Generally, how clean the break is, how large the break is and whether anything other than the bone is affected are three big factors.

I shattered my pinky and had to have pins in it to hold the shattered pieces stable. That was the worst recovery I've ever had because it was not a clean break, it just blew into pieces.

I fractured my humerus playing football and the pain was so intense I passed out taking a standing x-ray. They put me in a sling with a very wide and thick ACE bandage to wrap around my upper body to hold the arm in place for 10 weeks (thank goodness it was fall and getting cooler). The other option was an upper body cast, so sling it was. pain sucked hard for a week and a half and only meds will let you sleep. Gets better eventually of course, but it is slow. rehab was a breeze. she will be in a grove in 10 days and on the mend. Best of luck!

She’s in a pretty heavy duty sling, but that’s it. It was a pretty clean break. Thanks for the info though. Hopefully it doesn’t take 10 weeks. It’s been one week and she seems to be making some big strides forward.

I fractured mine right in the middle playing basketball my senior year of high school and it hurt like hell. I opted for surgery to salvage some of my playing career and it was rough the first week or so then got a lot better. I never had to be in a cast which was great and I was back playing about 8 weeks later, although not at full strengh.

It looks like the doctor went overboard with screws - I have a titanium rod with 2 screws near the top and one near the bottom. This was 13 years ago and I still have the rod and I've had very little issues since.

Very rough recovery 9 months to a year and based on the alignment of her fracture I would worry about it having delayed healing or going on to being a non-union. Just my opinion. Was it an ortho trauma doc that did it?

I know it's probably just her shoulderblade, but you should at least have let him have his fantasy.

Hopefully it was clean and heals fast and clean.

Sorry just my opinion but the fracture isn’t reduced and you might need to get a second opinion. ( ortho PA here)

It means the articulation is off. My honest opinion is the surgeon did a poor job. I’m not sure if this is going to heal and she will be severely limited when it comes to range of motion.Think of it as the ice cream is still off the ice cream cone and it is not lined up correctly. Ice cream equals the humeral head and ice cream cone is the shaft of the humerus

Measure her wingspan on each side. Looks like they didn’t distract the humerus and just fixated it with a 2 cm overlap of the humeral head and humeral neck.

Might just be a weird angle, but might want an X-ray with three views to confirm instead of just an interoperative fluoroscopy pic.

The alignment and reduction is excellent, though this is just a single view.

The surgeon impacted the shaft into the humeral head to stabilize the fracture prior to plate and screw fixation, which significantly lowers the risk of fixation failure. Attempting to pull it out to length would leave a significant bony void at risk of varus displacement.

To the OP, the surgeon did a fine job by that single X-ray. I treat hundreds of these a year. It's a long recovery potentially, but most people regain excellent overall function though probably a bit limited from before injury.

How the hell do you do that at a water park? I’m taking my boys to one on a Friday and need to know.
